<p>Cambridge Arts Theatre kicks off 2026 in seriously show-stopping style. <strong>14–17 Jan</strong> sees Cambridge Operatic Society bring the razzmatazz with <em>Guys and Dolls</em> — a glittering mash-up of smooth-talking gamblers, earnest missionaries and big Broadway energy, complete with toe-tapping classics like Luck Be a Lady and Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat (expect to hum them all the way home). Then from <strong>21–24 Jan</strong>, the ever-excellent Marlowe Society returns with a fresh, intelligent take on Shakespeare’s <em>Twelfth Night</em> — all mistaken identities, romantic chaos and razor-sharp wit, delivered by Cambridge University’s most prestigious theatre troupe. Curtain up, January — you’re off to a very good start</p>

<p>Over in Suffolk, <strong>17 Jan</strong> brings a hefty dose of nostalgia as <a href="https://ipswichtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/peter-andre-the-very-best-of-frankie-valli-and-the-four-seasons-2/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Very Best of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons</a> lands with Peter Andre at the helm. This feel-good musical journey charts the rise of the four boys from Jersey who went from singing under a streetlamp to global stardom, soundtracked by those era-defining hits you absolutely will know by heart. Big voices, slick storytelling and a full-on trip down memory lane — consider this your excuse to swap slippers for sequins</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-comedy">COMEDY</h2>



<p>January doesn’t have to be joyless — not when this lot are in town. <strong>16 Jan</strong> sees <a href="https://www.cornex.co.uk/events/bridget-christie-jacket-potato-pizza" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bridget Christie</a> bring her brilliant, brainy brand of comedy to Cambridge Corn Exchange with a shiny new show from the creator of <em>The Change</em> (expect laughs with a side of sharp insight). Then over in Ipswich, <strong>22–23 Jan</strong>, <a href="https://ipswichtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/russell-howard-dont-tell-the-algorithm/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Russell Howard</a> returns with his brand-new 2026 tour — no phones, no scrolling, no algorithm interference… just humans, jokes and big laugh energy. Frankly, it’s the reset we all need.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-outdoors">OUTDOORS</h2>

<p>Fresh air, winter beauty and a reason to actually leave the house — January’s outdoorsy offerings are quietly brilliant. Little (and big) detectives can sharpen their sleuthing skills at Cambridge University Botanic Garden’s <a href="https://www.botanic.cam.ac.uk/whats-on/crazy-cone-caper-3/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Crazy Cone Caper Trail</a>, running <strong>2 Jan–early March</strong> — a free, self-led whodunit packed with pinecones from around the world, clever clues and just enough mystery to keep everyone hooked. Snowdrop season also starts to steal the spotlight at Peckover, where winter blooms put on a delicate show every weekend from <strong>10 Jan–8 Mar</strong> — think snowdrops, winter aconites and that first hopeful whiff of spring. And for those itching to see the landscape with fresh eyes, <strong>25 Jan</strong> brings <a href="https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/suffolk/sutton-hoo/events/f728116c-6e85-4457-837a-e97f739d2780" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">photography workshops</a> at Sutton Hoo with pro snapper Phil Morley, offering landscape and close-up sessions suitable for all abilities — history, scenery and camera skills all in one very satisfying wander.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-food-amp-drink">FOOD &amp; DRINK</h2>

<p>January dining, but make it indulgent. <strong>Sat 24 Jan</strong> is <a href="https://www.marquissuffolk.com/events/78-36/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Burns Night</a> at Marquis Suffolk, where tartan-clad tradition reigns supreme with classic Scottish dishes, live music and the all-important Address to a Haggis — plus a whisky tasting flight if you fancy leaning fully into the spirit of the evening. Going big? Aldeburgh pulls out all the stops with a <a href="https://the-suffolk.co.uk/events/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Burns Night Supper &amp; Dance at The Suffolk and Jubilee Hall</a> — a four-course supper with full ceremonial flair, followed by a torchlit walk to a proper ceilidh of reels, jigs and pudding mid-dance (as it should be).</p>



<p>Elsewhere, <a href="https://www.theangel.co.uk/offers/fish-chips-and-sips/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Angel Hotel</a> in Bury St Edmunds, they’re giving fish and chips a seriously glam glow-up with Fish, Chips &amp; Sips — think crisp IPA-battered fish, proper accompaniments and an ice-cold glass of Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée Champagne, served <strong>Mon–Sat, 12–3pm</strong> (because January still deserves sparkle). And if your wallet’s feeling the post-Christmas pinch, the Chestnut Group’s <a href="https://www.threeblackbirds.co.uk/january-offers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">January set menu</a> comes in hot with two comforting courses for under £20 — soups, stews and sticky puds designed to banish winter blues, one spoonful at a time.</p>
