<p>Forget courtroom dramas – Fen Ditton had its own scandalous soap opera back in the 1800s. When local gardener Edward Smith drunkenly accused the rector’s wife of adultery, all hell broke loose. Hauled before the church courts, Smith was found guilty of defamation and ordered to perform public penance in Fen Ditton church – dressed in a white sheet, no less, while a crowd of 3,000 locals jeered from the pews. Think&nbsp;<em>Bridgerton</em>&nbsp;meets&nbsp;<em>The Vicar of Dibley</em>, with a dash of scandal and small-village glee.</p>
