<p>You’ll want to ease up on the carbs before this two-day gastro extravaganza to ensure you have enough room to sample all the food and drink on offer. There’s lots to see and eat, with more than 100 stalls, a farmer’s market and demos from celeb chefs &#8211; ok Martin Platt from Corrie who now presents Channel 5’s <em>The Great Northern Cookbook</em> and <em>Ready, Steady, Cook </em>chef Paul Rankin, in the Cookery Theatre &#8211; but still, there&#8217;s a lot of fine local food to graze on and we&#8217;re here for it. </p>

<p>Ever wondered why you were addicted to things like Danish police drama <em>The Killing? </em>Well, top telly historian Lucy Worsley will explain that it’s not just the lead character’s knitwear that kept you hooked in her one-night only show <em>Lucy Worsley: A Very British Murder</em> at the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="https://www.cambridgeartstheatre.com/whats-on/lucy-worsley-very-british-murder (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.cambridgeartstheatre.com/whats-on/lucy-worsley-very-british-murder" target="_blank">Cambridge Arts Theatre</a> (Aug 8). She explores our middle-class fascination with murder in the form of entertainment through novels, plays and the press. Gulp. </p>



<p>Book tickets for an open-air adaptation of David Walliam’s <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="https://www.heartbreakproductions.co.uk/venues/abbey-gardens/?h_show=31121 (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.heartbreakproductions.co.uk/venues/abbey-gardens/?h_show=31121" target="_blank">Mr Stink at Abbey Gardens</a> (Aug 17, 3pm and 6.30pm performances) or West Stow Country Park (Aug 26), and you&#8217;ll be indulging in an activity that makes you feel like you’re being a good parent <em>and</em> you get to eat a picnic. Winner. </p>

<p><a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="https://snapemaltings.co.uk/season/summer-at-snape/ (opens in a new tab)" href="https://snapemaltings.co.uk/season/summer-at-snape/" target="_blank">Summer at Snape</a> (that’s Maltings, not the creepy teacher in Harry Potter), sees daily music performances throughout August and the line up is VARIED: jazz, funk, soul, classical, blues, pop, country &#8211; it’s like someone’s been blindfolded and let loose on Spotify. Tbh some gigs are already sold out, but we’ve spotted some choice shows with tickets still available, such as Mica Paris and the London Community Gospel Choir. There are also free events at SM’s beautiful new outdoor Dome Stage.&nbsp;</p>



<p>If you fancy a flutter and some fangirling, chart-topper Jess Glynne’s performing at <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="https://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/newmarket-nights-racing-jess-glynne-newmarket-06-08-2021/event/37005AABAB74145B (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/newmarket-nights-racing-jess-glynne-newmarket-06-08-2021/event/37005AABAB74145B" target="_blank">Newmarket Nights: Racing + Jess Glynne</a> on Aug 6. Singing her number one hits at the top of your voice, we’re thinking specifically <em>Hold My Hand </em>and <em>All I Am </em>(just us?), fuelled by rosé and a win sounds like a decent Friday night out, so <em>Don’t Be So Hard</em> <em>On Yourself, </em>grab a friend and get some tickets.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The concept of ‘open-air cinema’ with drinks make us so happy we’re ignoring the weird, rainy, Autumn-style weather and embracing <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="https://www.thethreehills.co.uk/enchanted-cinema-weekend  (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.thethreehills.co.uk/enchanted-cinema-weekend" target="_blank">The Threehills Enchanted Cinema Weekend</a> (Aug 13-15) in a meadow like it’s a lover. Choose from <em>A Star is Born</em>, <em>Bohemian Rhapsody</em> and <em>The Greatest Showman</em>. There will be drinks, there will be a food truck, there will be individual deckchairs, there will be fun.&nbsp;</p>

Ninety colourful cow sculptures decorated by various artists dotted all over the city to discover &#8211; how amoozing. Fun, free and all the family can do it (our kind of day out). Plus, when it finishes (Sept 4), the sculptures will be auctioned off to raise funds for local children’s charity <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="https://www.break-charity.org/charity/ (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.break-charity.org/charity/" target="_blank">Break</a>.</p>



<p>You might have seen the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="https://cityviewwheel.co.uk (opens in a new tab)" href="https://cityviewwheel.co.uk" target="_blank">Big Wheel Cambridge</a> erected on Parker’s Piece, but have you actually been on it yet? This ferris wheel is impressively tall (36 metres), so you can see for miles and the kids will love it. Admittedly it doesn&#8217;t go fast enough to rival anything at Alton Towers, but it’s still a way to get a natural high this summer holiday. Go before it’s taken down in Oct.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Kids armed with an arrow and bow, what could go wrong? Book an <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="https://www.weststow.org/whats-on/details.cfm?id=456747&amp;ins=845190 (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.weststow.org/whats-on/details.cfm?id=456747&amp;ins=845190" target="_blank">Archery Experience At West Stow Country Park</a> (Aug 14) and they’ll learn all the basics from a qualified GB archery instructor, like how to hit a target and why not to aim at their siblings/friends/parents.&nbsp;<br></p>

<p>Get their creative juices flowing, or at least get the paints out, for <a rel="noreferrer noopener" aria-label="https://www.aldeburghcarnival.com/whats-on/ (opens in a new tab)" href="https://www.aldeburghcarnival.com/whats-on/" target="_blank">Aldeburgh Carnival&#8217;s Get the Bug and Paint a Pebble competition</a>. Find a pebble, paint a bug on it and hand the results in at the table outside Riley &amp; Riley Jewellers on Saturday Aug 14 (between 1-3pm) and your mini masters could be in with a chance of winning a £5, £10 or £15 prize. Sadly the carnival’s not running this year, but it will be back with bells on (literally) in 2022.</p>

Your petite palaeontologists can follow a dino footprint trail to find clues to design their own dinosaur as well as discovering fossils too.&nbsp;</p>
