<p>Forget what you think you know about war museums: dusty displays, muffled commentary, and “please don’t touch” signs galore. <a href="https://www.iwm.org.uk/visits/iwm-duxford">Imperial War Museum</a>, Duxford is here to shake up your assumptions and deliver a full-throttle, family-friendly, hands-on day out that’s as exhilarating as it is educational.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-lowdown">THE LOWDOWN</h3>

<p>Modern, clean, and beautifully spread out (so no endless queues or elbow-jousting in cramped corridors), Duxford is as much about the experience as it is the artefacts. It’s huge: think airfields, hangars, interactive exhibitions, and even a kids’ play zone that puts most theme parks to shame.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-to-do">WHAT TO DO</h3>



<p><strong>Fly high (without leaving the ground):</strong> With everything from British Spitfires to American bombers on show, the aircraft collection is jaw-dropping. A peek inside the Concorde cockpit? Yes, please. Climb up to see the pilot’s-eye view? Absolutely. No surprise my kids were utterly captivated.</p>

<p><strong>Let the kids loose:</strong> The new <strong>Weston Play Zone</strong> is reason alone to visit. Aviation-themed with a massive plane-shaped climbing frame, zip lines, trampolines, tunnel slides and even spinning tyres, it’s basically a mini theme park – safely enclosed, beautifully maintained and designed to exhaust small people (hurrah!).</p>



<p>The <strong>Observation Block</strong> was a standout – a brilliantly recreated 1940s operations room that plunges you straight into the tension of WW2. Atmospheric, immersive, and genuinely moving.</p>

<p>My daughter loved the interactive exhibits: videos, phone recordings, flight trackers and quiz stations dotted throughout the museum. Want to try on a pilot’s uniform? No problem. Press buttons, pull levers and get stuck in – no bored kids here.</p>

<p>The <strong>Conservation in Action hangar</strong> was my husband’s happy place – watch real-life aircraft restoration up close. One for the wannabe engineers or anyone obsessed with how things work.</p>

<p>The final hangar – the <strong>American Air Museum</strong> – features suspended aircraft, emotive storytelling, and the absolutely enormous B-52 Stratofortress. Walking underneath it = goosebumps.</p>

<p>There’s a café and restaurant serving all the classics (hello, tea and cake), plus an ice cream van, sweet van, and plenty of outdoor picnic benches if you’ve brought your own spread. Big tick for keeping everyone fuelled and happy.</p>



<p>There&#8217; seating galore, especially around the play zone. So, you can sit back with a coffee and watch the chaos (we mean joy) unfold.</p>



<p>Fancy a flight? You can book a ride in a real aircraft or try the simulator for a virtual thrill. We didn’t fly this time, but loved watching others take off in a Spitfire from our front-row perch.</p>

<p>A sky-high family day out with something for literally everyone. Imperial War Museum, Duxford is immersive, inspiring, and brilliantly balanced – full of wow-factor moments, hands-on fun, and thoughtful storytelling. The kids didn’t want to leave (and neither did we).</p>
