Thetford Garden Centre
More than just a place to buy your compost, Thetford Garden Centre is a full-on lifestyle destination complete with stylish homeware, a fab café and year-round events.

If your idea of a garden centre is a slightly sad trolley and a few droopy begonias, allow Thetford Garden Centre to completely reset your expectations. This family-run Norfolk gem has been turning quick trips for compost into several glorious hours (and several accidental houseplant purchases) since 1982.
Founded by Jean and Paul Nixon with absolutely no retail or horticultural experience, the business started life in old vehicle servicing units in Thetford town centre before quickly outgrowing the space and moving to its current purpose-built site. More than four decades later, it’s still proudly family-run, with generations of the Nixon family involved along the way.
Yes, there are plants – and loads of ’em – alongside stylish homeware, gifts and all the garden essentials you definitely didn’t plan on buying but somehow end up loading into your boot anyway. But what really makes this place stand out is the atmosphere: friendly, knowledgeable and genuinely community-minded. It’s also BCorp Certified, with sustainability and environmental responsibility at the heart of the business – always a big tick in our books.
And then there’s the Lime Kiln Kitchen, the on-site café serving breakfasts, lunches and dangerously tempting afternoon teas for when all that plant shopping inevitably works up an appetite. Add in a packed calendar of events – from informative gardening talks and family activities to summer evenings with street food pop-ups (hello Norfolk Pizza Co) – and you have a place that feels less “garden centre” and more fab day out.
Come for the compost, stay for the cake.
