Putting the hot back in Cambridge hotels, The Fellows House opened its doors in 2021 and was an instant hit with everyone from families to groups of friends to business people, who all fell for its spacious rooms and swish extras. A short stroll from the city centre, it’s an arty hotel inspired by, you’ve guessed it, fellows of the city’s famous university, who are depicted in all kinds of ingenious ways throughout the interior: think an oil painting of Dr Davidson Nicol (the first black African fellow at Cambridge uni), a DNA-inspired wall panel and books penned by, or themed around, Cambridge alumni on the bar’s bookshelves. Even the cocktail menu is a nod to fellows – who could resist ordering an Attenborough’s Life On Earth (includes vodka, bee pollen and vermouth)? Not Muddy, that’s for sure.

All 131 rooms are just the kind we prefer – luxurious without being over the top. There are four types – standard, studio, apartments and duplex – which are great value for notoriously pricey Cambridge. Muddy loves the Attenborough suites for a family vaycay which come with a fully-equipped kitchen, lounge with sofa bed for the kids and separate bedroom and bathroom, all beautifully furnished with soft linen, The White Company Noir toiletries and fluffy robes.

The pampering doesn’t end at the rooms though, oh no not at Fellows House. There’s also a pool to splash around in, with a sauna and steam room alongside, and a really well-stocked fitness studio which Muddy didn’t test out because we forgot our kit (sorry not sorry).

Folio Bar has a classy member’s club vibe – think pool table, velvet sofas, comfy armchairs and a lovely long bar with curios behind which is a great spot for people-watching early evening. Next door, Folio Kitchen restaurant has Manhattan vibes with its black and white tiled flooring, huge hanging lights, art-lined walls and leather banquettes. The menu champions farm-to-fork local produce with a real emphasis on inventive plant-based dishes, like orange and ginger braised chickory, toasted walnuts, spicy carrots and Jerusalem artichoke crisps, alongside old school crowd pleasers like The Fellows Burger. Sage of Cambridge is the hotel’s chic little cafe at the front of the hotel, ideal if you just want to grab a coffee and pastry in the morning rather than have a full English in Folio Kitchen, plus it’s a cool space you can also hire for events like a cocktail making class with friends.

Cambridge is on your doorstep, but it’s wonderful to return to this stylish haven after a day in the city. Muddy’s already looking forward to another stay!

The hotel holds lots of fun ticketed events too, for hotel guests and the community, so check out what’s on this month (or why not hire a space for your own cool night!):
