The Debenham Lion
Step inside an historic pub in the heart of Suffolk – the food is worth the visit alone.

In the heart of Debenham – a charming Suffolk village rich with history – you’ll find The Debenham Lion, a beautifully restored country pub with a story that stretches back more than five centuries. Lovingly brought back to life by a local family, The Lion once again stands proud at the centre of village life, just as it has done since its earliest days as the ‘Gylynghows’ brewhouse in the 15th century.
Step inside and you’ll discover a characterful blend of historic charm and modern comfort. Whether you’re cosying up by the fire in the atmospheric tap room with a pint of local ale, or settling in for a leisurely meal with friends in the saloon bar or snug, there’s something deeply special about this place.
As a free house, The Lion champions a regularly rotating selection of local beers and guest ales, alongside a carefully curated wine list that brings together the best of East Anglia and continental Europe. The menu is proudly rooted in classic British pub fare, brought to life with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients from Suffolk and beyond. From hearty favourites to refined takes on countryside classics, every dish tells its own story.
The ceiling of the corner room still bears the initials of the Harryson family, who transformed the building during the Tudor period, and the pub itself carried on quietly serving the village through centuries of change – until its closure in 1998.
But now, after more than two decades and a meticulous restoration with architect Mark Hoare and historian Timothy Easton, The Lion roars once again. Today, it’s more than just a pub – it’s a celebration of local heritage, good food, and great company.
There’s always something happening at The Lion – from lively pub quizzes to relaxed Wine Wednesdays – and the food offering is worth the trip alone. Try signature dishes like the much-loved Lion Burger with homemade fries and coleslaw, or the Suffolk blonde beer-battered haddock. For something a little more refined, pan-fried hake with Norfolk samphire and chorizo butterbean cassoulet never fails to impress. Don’t skip dessert: the Lion’s Tiramisu and Suffolk Meadow Ice Creams are firm faves, and the East Anglian Cheeseboard rounds things off perfectly.
Whether you’re a local popping in for a pint or a visitor in search of a great meal in historic surroundings, The Debenham Lion is the perfect place to relax, refuel and enjoy the best of Suffolk hospitality.
