The Carpenters Arms, Great Wilbraham
This gorgeous village pub has a rich history, but inside you’ll find spectacular colour pop interiors, a modern British menu, and beautiful boutique dog-friendly bedrooms.
The Carpenters Arms in the lovely South Cambs village of Great Wilbraham, is one of those places you don’t want to judge by its traditional exterior. This roadside inn has been central to the community for 250 years, but thanks to an amazing renovation by The Chestnut Group (the owners of other much-loved East Anglian locals such as The Westleton Crown, The Packhorse Inn Moulton and The Black Lion Long Melford), the pub has a brand new 21st century identity and interior, and to say it’s wow-factor would be an understatement.
Step over the ancient threshold and you’re greeted by vibrant bold colours, daring wallpaper, fabulous art, and a stunning light-filled glass restaurant. There are still plenty of original features to give it that homely rural village vibe though, such as open fires, beams and original oak. In short, it’s a heavenly place to eat, drink, and socialise. In fact, you won’t want to leave, and you don’t have to. Upstairs there are four boutique bedrooms, all individually decorated and made to be just as welcoming to humans as dogs!
The Carpenters Arms isn’t all style and no substance though, because the food is more than a match for the stunning surroundings. Head Chef, Seb Mansfield and his team have created a tempting modern British menu using seasonal produce from the best local suppliers. The menu and setting manages to work for everything from a quick bite to eat after a stroll in the countryside to a smart celebratory three-course dinner with family and friends. There’s even a lunch club menu that’s ideal for business meetings, tea and cake afternoons on a Thursday – Saturday and a well thought-out kids’ menu.
