The Ickworth Hotel, Bury St Edmunds

This heavenly hotel is perfect for parents with young children who are desperate for a break, but don’t want to scrimp on a bit of luxury for themselves!

If you’re after historic grandeur without the snobbery, The Ickworth Hotel in Suffolk delivers in style. Set within 1,800 acres of glorious National Trust parkland, this former Hervey family estate – a palatial Italianate pile near Bury St Edmunds – is now a relaxed, family-first bolthole courtesy of the Luxury Family Hotels group. It’s all high ceilings and sweeping staircases, but with muddy wellies in the hallway and dogs snoring by the fire (yes, four-legged friends are welcome too, for £25 per night complete with bed, bowl and Doggy A La Bark menu).

Inside, it’s geared to make family life feel like a treat, not a chore. Kids under two eat free, you’ll find Yoto players, Bugaboo kit and Rumble Tums baby gear to borrow, and the Ofsted-registered Four Bears Den offers two hours of complimentary childcare for every night stayed. There’s also an indoor pool, baby listening, fairy garden, woodland trails, bikes, cinema room and dressing-up spaces. Phew.

While the kids are off adventuring, grown-ups can sneak off to the spa or sip fizz in the adults-only Frederick’s restaurant. Fancy something a little extra? Book into their adorable grown-up and kids’ afternoon teas (mini sandwiches and Bridgerton vibes included). Keep an eye out for a big winter refurb too – this lovely place is getting a glow-up.

All guests can explore the Ickworth Estate and House for free – a proper perk – and whether you’re roaming the gardens, soaking up history or just collapsing on a squishy sofa with a glass in hand, it’s the sort of place that manages to charm all ages. A real find for families craving space, heritage and actual relaxation.
