Cosy winter dining in Suffolk & Cambs

Baby it's cold outside and what better way to warm up than a feast somewhere fabulous? We're talking tipis, dining domes, igloo pods, roaring fires, twinkling fairy lights & winter wonderland terraces.

The Cock, Hemingford Grey

Love this traditional riverside country pub, though if you want something a bit more spesh than the usual fireside setting, this year you can enjoy an Xmas meal with all the trimmings in a heated dining pod in the garden. It’s totally luxe – candles, cushions, blankets and lights – and private so we’re thinking date night or mates night!

The Willow Tree, Bourn

So many options! Will you tuck into your roasted ribeye and horseradish in the candle-lit restaurant, by the fire in the bar, on the heated al fresco terrace, inside a giant tipi with fire pit and fairy lights or perhaps in a private winter wonderland dome? The choice is yours!

The Crown, Stoke-by-Nayland

The winter garden’s back and we’re here for it! If you’ve never been, book a table pronto as you’ll love the twinkling lights, flame heaters, faux fur throws and candlelight, not to mention the festive menu including local game terrine and free range Norfolk turkey.

Isaacs on the Quay, Ipswich

Igloos for up to eight guests by the marina makes for a magical festive feast setting. Available to book from 24 Nov – 2 Jan, you get your private pod for three hours’ exclusive use plus an Xmas menu and drinks (make mine a snowball).

The Rupert Brooke, Grantchester

They might deck their halls with boughs of holly, but we prefer the winter garden tipi decked with blankets, candles and fairylights tbh. Rustic tables and real log fires add to the warmth, literally, as does a generous portion of turkey ballotine with wild mushrooms and dauphinoise potatoes.

The Three Tuns, Great Abington

How cute are these beach-style dining huts in the garden of The Three Tuns? Rolled out during the pandemic but such a hit they’re here for another season, each one has heating and its own music system and to add to the beach party vibe the pub serves delicious Thai food!

The Northgate, Bury St Edmunds

Loving the laidback winter look at this canopy-covered terrace, which has that snug vibe we’re all after this Christmas. Pop in for a hot choc mid-shopping in Bury, or linger for longer over a roast parsnip soup and squash, sage and shallot tartlet.

Anchor Inn, Nayland

There’s lots of Christmassy choice at this popular riverside pub which has thrown an ice skating rink into its Xmas offer this year. Take your pick from dining in a dome, to the whimsical Ivy Room or get cosy by the fire in the Grade II-listed pub. Loving the skate and dine package, which includes a kids’ menu – treat yourself to the truffle burger and sticky toffee pudding then work off the calories on the rink!

NOVI Bar, Cambridge

Cambridge’s top cocktail bar transforms its rooftop terrace, which is SO popular in summer, into a snug winter wonderland for the festive season. Expect sheepskin throws, heaters, strings of lights, outdoor heaters in this cosy den along with a Christmas drinks menu too – think mulled wine and cider.

The Weeping Willow, Barrow

Warm yourself by the fire at this scenic setting, where hot choc and mulled wine flow throughout the day and you’re never far from a faux fur throw or a twinkling fairy light. Food-wise it would be criminal not to try the eggnog brulé, spa anise ice cream and burnt butter shortbread before Dec 25!
