<p>Any of the gorgeous villages around Newmarket are wonderful places to live, but Moulton on the Suffolk side of the border stands out for its bucolic beauty, historic houses, riverside walks (with a charming 15th-century bridge), amazing pub, super-cute Post Office and Stores and proximity to town. Living here is a true escape to the country, but with amazing amenities right on your doorstep. </p>

<p>Just the one pub, but it&#8217;s a corker. <a href="https://www.thepackhorseinn.com">The Packhorse Inn</a> was lovingly refurbished in 2024 to include a new light-filled barn restaurant area with gorgeous views over the village green. Boutique rooms have been added at the back and all areas, from the wood-panelled bar to the characterful private function room, have been given a Instagrammable facelift. Plus, there’s a large garden to soak up the sun. The food here is top notch too, particularly the Sunday roast. </p>

<p>The village has the cutest <a href="https://www.facebook.com/newmoultonstores/?locale=en_GB">Post Office and Stores</a> that&#8217;ll make you feel like you&#8217;ve stepped into the set of <em>Heartbeat</em>, and it&#8217;s a joy to support. It sells everything you need day to day – newspapers, baked goods, locally grown fruit and veg, sandwiches and rolls for lunch plus general store items. There are seats outside so you can get to know your new neighbours over a coffee and a slice of homemade cake, and Friday nights at the shop is burger night. </p>



<p>Otherwise the nearest shops are in Newmarket, where you&#8217;re covered for food stores (including a Waitrose), gift shops and clothing boutiques like the lovely <a href="https://marthavshop.co.uk/">Martha V</a>. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-amp-wellbeing">HEALTH &amp; WELLBEING</h2>



<p>There&#8217;s a well-regarded yoga teacher in the village, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/MindsetandSoul/?locale=en_GB">Mindset &amp; Soul</a>, who runs regular classes for all abilities in the village hall. There&#8217;s a park next to the village hall and a playing field with lots of space for exercise, dog walks and a play area for kids. The River Kennett flows through the village, with lovely walking routes along it. You will need to pop into Newmarket for GP practices and dentists</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community">COMMUNITY</h2>



<p>The pub and The Stores are at the heart of the community and there are regular village events throughout the year at both. <a href="https://www.achurchnearyou.com/church/2170/">St Peter&#8217;s Church</a> is also really active and hosts music events and talks with supper. In July there&#8217;s a village Fun Day with a duck race down the river, dog show and all the usual bake sales and crafty bits. There&#8217;s also a wildlife group, an am dram society, a cricket club, beavers, scouts and cubs and a community lunch club.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nearby-attractions">NEARBY ATTRACTIONS </h2>



<p><a href="https://www.thejockeyclub.co.uk/newmarket/">Newmarket Racecourses</a> are just 12 mins away and alongside all the usual race days, the courses also hold Newmarket Nights on Fridays in the summer &#8211; music concerts featuring A-list bands and musicians. For some serious R&amp;R, <a href="https://www.bedfordlodgehotelspa.co.uk">Bedford Lodge Hotel</a> has a stunner of a spa and is also in nearby Newmarket. There&#8217;s a small vineyard down the road in Wickhambrook, <a href="https://cooperscroftvineyard.wordpress.com">Coopers Croft</a>, where you can enjoy tours and tastings.  </p>

<p>A lot of the culture in these parts revolves around horses so get up to speed with a visit to the brilliant <a href="https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=national+horseracing+museum&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8">National Horseracing Museum</a> on Palace Street, which holds exhibitions and family-friendly events, has a cool simulator to try out and a really lovely restaurant and bakery on site. Living in Moulton is a cultural experience of its own too &#8211; the village is mentioned in the Domesday Book and is situated on the <a href="https://icknieldwaypath.co.uk/">Icknield Way</a>, the oldest road in Britain. </p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-nurseries">NURSERIES</h2>



<p><a href="https://www.moulton-preschool.com">Moulton Pre-School</a> runs in the village hall on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:15am – 2:15pm. There&#8217;s a very well-regarded nursery that takes babies as young as three months at <a href="https://fairsteadhouse.org/nursery/">Fairstead House</a> in Newmarket just 10 mins away.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-schools">SCHOOLS</h2>



<p>There&#8217;s a primary school, <a href="https://www.moulton.suffolk.sch.uk">Moulton CEVC Primary School</a>, in the village (Ofsted Outstanding). <a href="https://fairsteadhouse.org/">Fairstead House School</a> is a small co-ed school and nursery in Newmarket with a strong musical reputation and amazing pastoral care. <a href="https://suffolkcambs.muddystilettos.co.uk/kids/school-reviews/fairstead-house-school-nursery-newmarket/">Read a review here</a>. For secondary school, there&#8217;s <a href="https://newmarketacademy.co.uk/">Newmarket Academy</a> (Ofsted Good) in town or a bus can take children to <a href="https://www.kingsely.org">King&#8217;s Ely</a>, a sister school to Fairstead, with a very strong reputation for music and sport. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-kept-secret">BEST KEPT SECRET</h2>



<p>Having a flutter on the gee gees and need some extra intel? Head to the junction between Moulton and Kentford where you&#8217;ll find The Boy&#8217;s Grave, where a shepherd boy is believed to be buried. Flowers often mysteriously appear on the grave and it&#8217;s said that if any appear during Derby Week a horse from the Newmarket Stables will win. The colour of the flowers also indicates what colour horse will win!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute">COMMUTE</h2>



<p>You can easily get to Newmarket, Cambridge, Ely and Bury St Edmunds from this well-connected village. You can get to London by train from nearby Dullingham Station (one change at Cambridge).</p>
