<p>To live in Cambridge is to luck out, but if you snap up a house in Newnham, to the south west of the city, then you&#8217;ve really hit the jackpot. This chi-chi suburb, which has the community feel of a leafy village, also offers the killer combo of greenery and amenities on the doorstep, thanks to the nature reserve and river. You&#8217;ll need to swot up though before you meet the neighbours – Newnham is said to be one of the &#8220;cleverest places in Britain&#8221;, with more Nobel Prize winners than anywhere else in the UK.</p>

<p>Enjoy everything from Keralan food at <a href="https://riceboat.co.uk">Rice Boat</a> and steak at <a href="https://themillworks.co.uk">The Millworks</a> to traditional pub grub at <a href="https://www.instagram.com/redbullcambridge/?hl=en">The Red Bull</a> and Thai food at <a href="https://salathong.co.uk">Sala Thong</a>. For riverside views while you eat, you can&#8217;t beat <a href="https://www.greeneking.co.uk/pubs/cambridgeshire/granta">The Granta</a>, and our new favourite coffee stop is <a href="https://www.beantheory.co.uk">Bean Theory</a> on Newnham Road. Just over the river on Mill Lane there&#8217;s the <a href="https://www.gardenhousecambridge.co.uk">Garden House</a> restaurant on Mill Lane and Cambridge has a huge number of amazing restaurants including Michelin-starred <a href="https://midsummerhouse.co.uk">Midsummer House</a> and <a href="https://www.restaurant22.co.uk">Restaurant 22</a>. In warmer months, there&#8217;s nothing nicer than walking through Grantchester Meadows to Grantchester itself for lunch at one of the many amazing pubs – <a href="https://www.therupertbrooke.com">The Rupert Brooke</a>, <a href="https://www.redliongrantchester.co.uk">The Red Lion</a> and <a href="https://www.veragreenman.co.uk">The Green Man</a> – or tea and cake at the famous <a href="https://www.theorchardteagarden.co.uk">Orchard Tea Garden</a>. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-shop">SHOP</h2>



<p>There&#8217;s everything you need for daily life and then some in Newnham. There&#8217;s a butcher&#8217;s, a baker&#8217;s, a gift shop, a florist, a deli, a chemist, and a couple of food shops and convenience stores, plus you&#8217;re within walking distance of the shopping in Cambridge city centre. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-health-amp-wellbeing">HEALTH &amp; WELLBEING</h2>



<p>Stretch out after a day at work at the <a href="https://newnhamyoga.com">Newnham Yoga &amp; Pilates Studio</a> on Grange Road or if you&#8217;re after something a little more punchy try the <a href="https://www.cambridgebootcamps.co.uk/Timetable">Cambridge Bootcamp classes</a> on Lammas Land. There&#8217;s a GP surgery on Newnham Walk too and Cambridge Dental is based on Newnham Road.  </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-community">COMMUNITY</h2>



<p><a href="https://stmarksnewnham.org/community-centre/whats-on/">St Mark&#8217;s Church</a> in Newnham runs weekly community clubs including language and art lessons as well as yoga and ballet lessons for kids. The chrhci is alos home to a toddler club, messy church and youth group so is a brilliant place to meet other parents. <a href="https://www.nrclub.org">The Newnham Riverbank Club</a> is a brilliant place to meet people and to make the most of the river and nature reserve which makes this area of Cambridge so special. </p>

<p>Newnham is surrounded by green space, and one of the major draws is the fact that you can walk directly to the gorgeous Cambridge village of Grantchester along the river from here. There&#8217;s also <a href="https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/paradise-local-nature-reserve">Paradise Nature Reserve</a>, <a href="https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/sheeps-green-and-coe-fen-local-nature-reserve">Sheep&#8217;s Green</a> and <a href="https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/lammas-land">Lammas Land</a> (a park with pool, play area and tennis courts), <a href="https://www.cambridge.gov.uk/sheeps-green-and-coe-fen-local-nature-reserve">Coe Fen Nature Reserve</a> (where cows still graze) and the Mill Pond all on the doorstep here, making it a true city-meets-countryside setting. </p>



<p>Of course, the city of Cambridge is one big attraction, and there are amazing things to see on every corner. Some of our favourite sights include the Mathematical Bridge, the view from the top of Great St Mary’s Church, The Bridge of Sighs, The Corpus Clock, and The Backs.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.botanic.cam.ac.uk/">Cambridge University Botanic Gardens</a>&nbsp;are absolutely beautiful, have acres of interesting plants to see and host cultural events all year round too.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-culture">CULTURE</h2>

<p>In early summer the skies above Newnham light up in a multi-coloured display thanks to the nearby May Ball Fireworks, or you can watch them from a punt on the river. Newnham is also home to <a href="https://www.westroad.org">West Road Concert Hall</a>, where world-class musical performances take place. Other cultural delights include the <a href="https://www.classics.cam.ac.uk/museum">Museum of Classical Archaeology</a>, plus all the colleges along the backs, including the wow-factor King&#8217;s College Chapel, are just on the border of the area. </p>

<p>You&#8217;ll need deep pockets *deep breath* – the average house price in Newnham was a whopping £1,287218 last year. No surprises really given that Cambridge is the second most expensive place to live in the UK after London! </p>

<p>Working parents rejoice because there are three nurseries all within walking distance &#8211; <a href="https://millingtonroadnursery.co.uk">Millington Road Nursery School</a> (Ofsted Outstanding), <a href="http://www.newnhamnursery.co.uk">Newnham Pre-School Nursery</a> (Ofsted Good) and <a href="https://monkeypuzzlegrangeroad.co.uk">Monkey Puzzle Nursery</a> on Grange Road (Ofsted Good). There&#8217;s also a pre-school for girls at <a href="https://suffolkcambs.muddystilettos.co.uk/kids/school-reviews/st-marys-school-cambridge-2/">St Mary&#8217;s School Cambridge.</a></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">SCHOOLS</h2>



<p>One of the reasons Newnham is such a coverted area of Cambridge is the incredible selection of schools. <a href="http://www.newnhamcroft.cambs.sch.uk/web">Newnham Croft Primary School</a> is Ofsted rated Good, and you&#8217;re surrounded by excellent independent schools too, including <a href="https://www.sjcs.co.uk/">St John&#8217;s College School</a> on Grange Road, <a href="https://www.kcs.cambs.sch.uk/">King&#8217;s College School</a> on West Road, <a href="https://www.theleys.net/">The Leys</a> just over the Fen Causeway bridge, <a href="https://suffolkcambs.muddystilettos.co.uk/kids/school-reviews/st-marys-school-cambridge-2/">St Mary&#8217;s School</a> on Bateman Street, and in Trumpington there&#8217;s <a href="https://www.stfaiths.co.uk">St Faith&#8217;s</a> and <a href="https://www.perse.co.uk">The Perse</a>. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">BEST KEPT SECRET</h2>



<p>Newnham College is the only girls-only college in Cambridge and Virginia Woolf based her famous essay, <em>A Room of One&#8217;s Own</em>, around the college. Famous alumni include Emma Thompson, Sylvia Plath, Iris Murdoch, Dame Jane Goodall, Germaine Greer and Clare Balding. A few other famous faces have called Newnham home over the years, including Charles Darwin&#8217;s son, Sir George Darwin, and Stephen Hawking. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">COMMUTE</h2>



<p>Cambridge station is a 9 min cycle or 30 min walk. A lot of people commute daily from into London, which takes 47 mins direct into King&#8217;s Cross St Pancras. There are also slightly slower trains into Liverpool Street, as well as Stansted Airport. If you&#8217;re commuting into Cambridge you&#8217;re laughing &#8211; buy a bike and sail past all the queuing cars! </p>
