<p><a href="https://thebellhotelsaxmundham.co.uk/rooms/">The Bell Hotel</a> in Saxmundham is a boutique Georgian beauty and the last purpose-built coaching inn in the UK. Lovingly restored in 2022 by Beales Hotels, it’s now a stylish 10-room bolthole at the heart of this Suffolk market town. Think elegant lighting, warm tones, pops of colour and a vibe that’s as welcoming as the pretty blue frontage.</p>

<p>Ten rooms, four categories (cosy, classic, spacious, deluxe), all named after local coastal towns. Expect Hypnos beds, smart TVs, thoughtful touches (including Nespresso in some), and deluxe rooms with roll-top baths. We stayed in the Aldeburgh room — velvet sofa, huge bed, robes, and even decaf tea in the selection (hallelujah). If you&#8217;re bringing your pooch, dog-friendly rooms are available too.</p>

<p>The Heath restaurant is intimate and chic, serving fresh, local, bistro-style fare: fish from the coast, Sutton Hoo chicken, Darsham steaks. Sunday roasts and afternoon teas are fast becoming legendary. Don’t miss the local Adnams beers at the Coast Lounge bar. Our highlight? Teriyaki salmon with rice and pak choi, finished with Suffolk Meadow honeycomb ice cream.</p>



<p>Foodie diary alert: this month there’s a Spanish gourmet evening — a four-course themed dinner with each dish paired to a specially selected wine, celebrating Spain’s finest flavours.</p>

<p>Not specifically marketed as such, but the team go the extra mile: comfy camp beds, colouring sheets (including bespoke sausage dog pics for my son), kid-sized fish and chips, and a farewell hot chocolate. Gold star service.</p>

<p>Two dog-friendly rooms plus endless walks nearby. Pooches welcome — and they’ll love it as much as you do. My son asked if he could have a pet dog on our stay, so perhaps next time we visit, we&#8217;ll be bringing our own four-legged friend with us. </p>

<p>Set in a Georgian building, but thoughtfully designed; the hotel is fully accessible, with a rear entrance featuring a slope and a lift providing access to all floors.</p>

Saxmundham itself is sleepy but charming for a pre-dinner wander. And the best part? After the buzz of the coast and the bustle of touristy hotspots, The Bell is the peaceful retreat to come back to.</p>

<p>A stylish boutique stay that nails the balance between local character and modern comfort. <p><strong>GOOD FOR:</strong> Couples looking for a romantic Suffolk escape; foodies; culture vultures; small families; weekend explorers.</p>



<p><strong>NOT FOR:</strong> Those wanting big-hotel facilities (spa, gym, pool) or a buzzy nightlife scene.</p>



<p><strong>THE DAMAGE:</strong> Rooms from around £130 per night, with food and drink priced fairly for the quality. Our room was around £300 per night, including breakfast. </p>
