BOARDING Full boarding begins from Year 3 for prep pupils, and with boarding fees starting at £10,988 a term, Finborough offers a home-from-home in a beautiful countryside setting. With international students also well catered for, there’s a genuine mix of cultures, backgrounds and life experiences that adds richness to school life.



The big news on site? The school have just announced a considerable investment in the <a href="https://www.finboroughschool.co.uk/2025/06/plans-for-significant-refurbishment-of-boarding-facilities-unveiled/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">complete refurbishment</a> of the boarding facilities. Each pupil will get their own personal space, complete with a dedicated desk for focused study. For the youngest boarders, this new design aims to create a cosy and comforting environment.

SPORTS Finborough doesn’t just do sport – it lives it. With an Olympic-standard gym, pristine pitches and a slick new multi-purpose sports hall, even the most reluctant athlete is nudged toward participation. 



The girls&#8217; hockey coach (pictured above) plays for England and was part of the team that won the Masters Hockey World Cup – so you know your child is in good hands. &nbsp;



And don’t worry if your child isn’t naturally competitive – the school values resilience over ribbons.



MUSIC, ART &amp; DRAMA Creativity takes centre stage here – literally. From early years, Finborough Prep treats music and the arts as vital to a child’s development. Specialist music facilities include a professional-grade recording studio and multiple rehearsal spaces, while the drama department has serious ambition (their recent production of Frozen involved 130 students over three nights). The atmosphere is inclusive and dynamic – art, music and performance are seen as essential tools for confidence-building and self-expression.

LITTLES The Little Finborough building is a woodland lodge and as magical as it sounds. Catering to children aged 6 months-7 years old, this early years hub blends EYFS and Montessori principles with regular Forest School adventures. From building dens to mindful yoga in a treehouse, learning here is joyful, natural and packed with purposeful play. Weekly forest school sessions come as standard – so pack those wellies.



From summer 2025, the nursery moves from a term-time setting to a year-round provision and they are about to unveil a new baby unit. Mrs Sarah Ruffles, who has taught at Finborough Prep for 12 years, (10 of those in Reception), will become the new nursery manager.

ACADEMICS Finborough Prep was awarded the ISA Independent Junior School of the Year in 2024. Yes, they get the grades – but that’s not the only goal. Small class sizes (around 15 in the prep school) allow for tailored teaching and a focus on developing thinking skills. Students benefit from mental health counselling, ELSA support, and “Character Coaching” that focuses on small wins to build self-esteem. Teachers know their students – not just their grades. THE HEAD Steven Clark isn’t your average head. Appointed as the UK’s youngest headteacher two decades ago, he’s quietly charismatic and deeply committed. A self-confessed introvert who thrives on student connection, Steven’s vision goes way beyond academics. His leadership is centred on values – resilience, empathy, inclusion – and his focus is helping each child find a “launching pad for life.” He’s visible, involved, and still clearly in love with education. 



QUIRKS The school is structured as a journey – nursery, pre-prep, prep, and senior – with each phase designed to match children’s emotional and intellectual development. Yet there’s a golden thread that runs through it all: character. It’s a word that appears again and again, and here, it means integrity, independence, and emotional strength.

ISI REPORTS The <a href="https://www.isi.net/institutions/school/finborough-school-6455" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">2023 inspection</a> couldn’t have been clearer: “tangibly happy,” “vibrant,” and “welcoming.” Teaching is well-planned, facilities support excellence, and students leave with a strong sense of purpose and community. It’s hard not to be impressed.



MOBILE PHONE POLICY This is a phone-free school, and they mean it. The aim isn’t just to limit screen time, but to boost engagement, reduce anxiety and free students to live in the moment. 



TRANSPORT Logistics? Sorted. Just five minutes from Stowmarket station and with a fleet of minibuses criss-crossing Suffolk and North Essex, daily commutes are simple. Direct trains, school-run shuttles and flexible routes make Finborough surprisingly reachable for families from Cambridge, Colchester, Ipswich, Bury and beyond.



WRAPAROUND CARE From 8am breakfasts to 5.30pm homework clubs, Finborough offers extensive wraparound care for busy families. Younger children enjoy enrichment activities, while older prep students can wind down or get ahead on studies – all with hot meals and structured supervision.



FEES Pre-prep fees start at £3,803 per term, rising to £4,876 at the top of prep. Full boarding kicks off from Year 3 at £10,988, with international boarders at £14,707. Nursery care (including meals) is £80 a day. Discounts apply for families with three or more children – a rare and welcome gesture.



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



Good for:&nbsp;Parents seeking an all-through, all-rounder option with brilliant academic results but also a strong emphasis on sport and character. This is a home away from home environment that nurtures pupils from nursery through to prep school.



Not for:&nbsp;Those uninterested in getting involved in at least one sport. It&#8217;s almost expected that you will take up an activity here. The good news? There&#8217;s plenty of options to choose from.
