Nights out in Bury St Edmunds are a whole lot fancier these days thanks to The Wine Cellar in the Buttermarket. This smart, yet relaxed, wine bar only opened in 2022 but has certainly made its mark on the town and its customers – winning both the Suffolk and Cambs’ best new start-up award as well as the National Muddy Stilettos Award!

It’s no surprise though, because this chic wine bar has something for everyone. It’s a heavenly and atmospheric space to spend an evening catching up with friends over a bottle, somewhere for wine lovers who want to swot up on their grape knowledge, or simply your go-to shop to pick up a bottle of something delicious to go with dinner that night or as a gift.

We love that there’s nothing snobby or pretentious about The Wine Cellar. Owner Bradley describes his new venture as ‘formally, informal’ – everyone (over 18!) is welcome here, and you won’t be subject to any high brow chat about caudalies, bouquets or tannins (unless you want to that is!). Instead you can simply sit back in one of the squishy sofas and admire the cool wine wall, or ask for Bradley’s expert advice to help you choose a new wine from the collection of over 100 bottles from around the world. In fact, the bar is now offering one of the biggest wine lists by the glass in the East of England with an incredible 80+ wines available.

Of course, man (and woman) cannot live on wine alone, so while you’re working your way through the wall of dreams, you’ll want to pair your choices with a sharing board of charcuterie and cheese as well as some of the delicious small plates on offer. And, if you’re not into wine then don’t worry because there are also beers, spirits, soft drinks and a zero alcohol range.

The Wine Cellar also hosts regular events such as painting workshops and wine tasting evenings, where you can learn more about grape varieties, producers and wine regions in a fun settings without feeling like you’re back at school.
