The Bell Hotel, Saxmundham

A stunning restoration and creative reimagining of a market town inn, The Bell Hotel Saxmundham offers affordable luxury in a lovely location near the coast with a small, but perfectly formed restaurant and attentive service.

The Bell Hotel Saxmundham sits pretty in the middle of this charming little Suffolk market town and is the beating heart of the community. Back in 2022 the Georgian building, which is the last purpose-built coaching inn the UK, was given a stunning makeover by family firm, Beales Hotels, who also own West Lodge Park in North London. And what a transformation… the building is now beautiful inside and out with stylish interiors thanks to local firm Cotton Tree Interiors – think elegant lighting and soft, warming tones plus a few colour pop accessories – and a welcoming vibe that perfectly matches the pretty blue frontage.

With only ten rooms to choose from across four categories (cosy double, classic double, spacious double and deluxe room) it’s boutique all the way at The Bell. All rooms are named after a lovely local coastal village or town and have been decorated subtly to match. Whether you opt for Southwold, Dunwich, Aldeburgh or Thorpeness, you’ll find large beds with Hypnos mattresses, smart televisions with Freeview and Chromecast, and refreshments including tea, coffee (some have Nespresso machines), water and biscuits. Deluxe rooms also have roll-top baths and three of the rooms are dog-friendly.

Downstairs there’s a charming cosy vibe, with all facilities masterfully provided within the original Georgian footprint. There’s the gorgeous Coast Lounge with a smart bar serving all manner of local tipples, including Adnam’s beers from just down the coast as well as an outside terrace for aperitifs in the warmer months.

The Restaurant is called The Heath and is intimate and chic and along with The Coast lounge there is space for 50 diners. If you’re celebrating something, hosting a meeting or want a secluded space just for your family and friends there’s a smart private dining room, The Coach Room, that seats 8 people too. Food is a real treat here, expect a bistro-style menu featuring a lot of fresh local fish and seafood from the nearby coast as well as Sutton Hoo chicken and Sirloin Steak from nearby Darsham. The Bell Hotel Saxmundham is fast becoming known in the area for its superior Sunday Roast and afternoon tea is a real treat here too.

Locations don’t get much better if you’re set on exploring all that Suffolk has to offer. You’re a stone’s throw from the best beaches and coastal villages (Southwold, Aldeburgh and Walberswick) but far enough inland to enjoy rolling countryside and Suffolk loveliest little towns – Woodbridge, Framlingham and Wickham Market. Plus the amazing concert venue with shops and views for days Snape Maltings is within easy reach, as is the historically fascinating Sutton Hoo, a National Trust owned Anglo-Saxon burial site. And while Saxmundham itself  is undeniably sleepy, there are a smattering of cute indie shops and beautiful buildings if you want to enjoy a walk straight from the front door.
