Picture this: two mums walk into a spa. No, it’s not the start of a bad joke or a half-baked daydream – it actually happened, thanks to the gorgeous <a href="https://suffolkcambs.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/the-gainsborough-health-club-spa-suffolk/">Gainsborough Health Club &amp; Spa</a> in Cavendish, Suffolk. I headed to this restored 15th-century, timber-framed barn with a fellow tired toddler mum, full of heady expectations about what a child-free day might look like. Spoiler: it didn’t disappoint.



The Gainsborough has scooped Best Day Spa in the 2021 and 2023 Muddy Stilettos Awards, so we knew we were in for a treat. What I didn’t expect was to feel so completely blissed out, so fast. Full disclosure: I’m terrible at relaxing. So much so that I wear a bracelet with the word relax to remind me to chill the F out. And as an ex-health and wellbeing editor, I’ve reviewed my fair share of spas across the UK and further afield. My problem? I can never quite get my brain to switch off long enough to enjoy the treatments.



So imagine my surprise when, midway through my 50-minute Full Body Massage (which flowed beautifully into a 25-minute facial and scalp massage), I had to discreetly wipe away dribble as I hovered somewhere between sleep and “is this real life?”

The Gainsborough Health Club &amp; Day Spa is tucked into a peaceful rural spot just outside the pretty Suffolk town of Clare. It’s a scenic and easy drive from Bury St Edmunds, Sudbury, Cambridgeshire and North Essex – and well worth the trip. Down a long private road with swoony Suffolk views, the spa sits in a handsome barn with plenty of parking right at the door.



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">THE VIBE</h3>

Even the most tightly-wound (guilty) would find it hard not to unwind here. The barn is light-filled and serene, with characterful beams, huge windows, and a calm, cosy feel – interrupted only by the occasional commentary from the resident peacocks outside. The layout is a bit of a rabbit warren, which means you rarely bump into other guests. On our Thursday spring visit, it felt just the right kind of buzzy without ever being busy – more like our own private hideaway.



We went for the <a href="https://www.thegainsborough.co.uk/spa/spa-experiences-and-packages/time-together-spa-day/">Time Together Spa Day</a>, which includes one treatment, use of the facilities, a Luna eye mask, and afternoon tea with a glass of Prosecco. There&#8217;s also a half-day version (our pick – limited childcare hours and all that), though if you can swing the full day, you’ll likely leave in a state of actual zen.



A tip: The Gainsborough does seasonal spa offers brilliantly. Keep an eye on the website for some seriously good-value deals, including the just-launched Summer Serenity Spa Day (from 1 June).

We didn’t mess about – straight into the treatment room for 50 minutes of total indulgence. Technically one treatment, it’s actually three: a full body massage, a 25-minute facial, and a scalp massage. Yes please.



My therapist expertly used hot stones to work out the laptop-hunch knots in my shoulders, alternating seamlessly between stones and hands. The pressure was bang-on for me – firm but soothing. Then came the facial: cleansing, toning, moisturising, with a facial roller smoothing out my worry lines and sleepless-night furrows.

But it was the little touches that elevated it: the weighted blanket over my feet, the warm flannel over my eyes, the therapist’s attentiveness throughout. It didn’t feel like a standardised routine – it felt personal.

Let’s be real: if you’re after a glossy, high-glam spa with rooftop lounges and Instagram backdrops, this isn’t it. The Gainsborough is rural, rustic and charming – less flash, more substance. The focus here is on excellent treatments, calm surroundings, and proper time out.



The pool – set beneath beautiful beams and bathed in natural light – is quietly stunning. We had it mostly to ourselves, so we did lazy lengths while catching up (child-free chat = joy). There’s a bubbling jacuzzi by the floor-to-ceiling windows, where we soaked in sunshine and silence. Nearby, there’s a small sauna and steam room, tucked discreetly into the corner.

The gym, near the main entrance, is well-equipped but out of the way enough that you don’t feel judged for skipping it entirely. It’s mainly used by local health club members, though you can tack on a workout if you’re that way inclined.



There’s a good-sized changing area with showers and direct access to the pool barn. The whole space feels boutique but bigger than you’d expect.

One of those nooks is the spacious relaxation room: low lighting, soft recliners, herbal teas on tap – an ideal post-treatment perch. The café, meanwhile, serves light lunches, snacks, and drinks, including Prosecco (obviously). Our three-tiered afternoon tea – sarnies, scones, cakes, tea and fizz – was the perfect reward for all our, um, hard relaxing.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h3>



Good for: A proper pamper day that won’t bankrupt you. The Gainsborough fills a much-needed niche – affordable, high-quality spa days in a peaceful countryside setting. Local? You can become a member for regular access to the facilities (and regular breaks from reality).



Not for: All-day lounging around the pool with a book or visiting with a big group of friends. The pool takes up most of the space in the barn, so there aren’t loungers right by the water.
