<p>Locals, commuters, and brunch-lovers alike – your next foodie favourite is quietly thriving just outside Cambridge. With artisan coffee, indulgent afternoon teas, and a no-fuss, all-flavour menu, <a href="https://www.histonstationhouse.com/">The Station House</a> is a hidden gem you’ll want to shout about (but maybe just to your inner circle).</p>



<p>Who knew that a simple stroll with his daughter would spark one of Histon’s most charming café success stories? That’s how owner David was inspired to open <strong>The Station House</strong>, a warm and welcoming hotspot tucked beside the guided busway. It&#8217;s become a buzzing local favourite – and trust us, once you’ve had afternoon tea here, you’ll understand why.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h3>

<p>Inside or out, it’s got serious charm – we opted for al fresco in the gorgeous courtyard, under the parasols and festoon lighting, settling into the prettiest ‘Birdcage’ seating area. With sunshine on our faces and friendly staff flitting between tables, it felt like the kind of place where time slows down (and you’ll be grateful it does).</p>



<p>Think laid-back, chatty, no-pressure dining. It was packed when we arrived (book ahead!) – a great sign – but the relaxed energy never wavered. Families, suited lunch-breakers, and couples like us all happily munching away.</p>

<p>Now let’s talk <strong>Afternoon Tea</strong>. Beautifully presented and a total triumph of balance – no sandwich overload here. The ham and smoked cheddar, and cucumber with mint cream cheese were fresh and spot-on. The smoked salmon and avocado tart? <em>Chef’s kiss</em> – rich, crisp, and satisfyingly savoury.</p>

<p>Then came the scones: golden, crunchy outside, soft and fluffy within, still warm and generously loaded with jam and clotted cream (because really, what is tea without a scone?). Sweet treats were top-tier – from caramel-centred macarons to a knock-out caramelised pear and chocolate tart (yes, a belt-loop was loosened, and I have no regrets). The tart was refreshing and nutty; a lovely twist on the usual suspects.</p>

<p>We needed a breather, as anyone who’s ever attempted to finish an afternoon tea knows – and we were never once rushed. Just endless top-ups of tea and the bliss of basking in the sunshine.</p>



<p>And while we couldn’t quite finish it all (takeaway boxes to the rescue!), the brownie – rich, gooey, perfectly chewy – made the perfect later treat (and was fiercely protected from the kids). The carrot cake? Moist, subtly spiced and gone in two bites.</p>

<p>From the look of other dishes flying past us, brunch and lunch here are just as impressive – colourful, generous plates that returned empty. Breakfast is served all day (hallelujah), and if the poached eggs are anything like the rest, we’ll be back soon.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kid-friendly">KID FRIENDLY?</h3>



<p><strong>Absolutely!</strong> This isn’t the kind of place where you need to hide the china from bullish toddlers or hush the giggles – families are warmly welcomed here. We spotted plenty of little ones happily tucking in, and I’ll definitely be bringing my brood back soon for the <strong>Junior Afternoon Tea</strong> – a charming setup complete with their own treats and even an <em>instant camera</em> to capture the fun while they feast.</p>



<p>Top parenting tip? Book a second table and a bottle of Prosecco for the grown-ups – let the kids snap photos and devour cake while you enjoy a (well-earned) sip and a breather. Win-win.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Dog-Friendly?</h3>



<p>Yep – and then some! The Station House is proudly pet-friendly. Dogs are more than welcome, and word on the street is they’ve even had the occasional <strong>cat</strong> or <strong>ferret on a lead</strong> drop by (we’re absolutely here for it – pet inclusivity at its finest).</p>

<p>Hot off the press: Owner David has recently taken on <strong><a href="https://www.stivesriverterrace.com/">The River Terrace in St Ives</a></strong> – a beautiful riverside spot that&#8217;s set to bring the same winning formula of hospitality done right to a whole new postcode. If The Station House is anything to go by, we’re expecting great things.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h3>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> Kids, pets and great food. It&#8217;s somewhere that will genuinely please the whole family and fast become a regular hot spot. </p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong> If you&#8217;re after fine dining, you might want to book up somewhere with a different vibe. This is casual dining at its best &#8211; brunch, lunch and afternoon tea, where you can catch up with friends and family in a relaxed and comfortable way.</p>



<p><strong>The damage:</strong> Afternoon tea starts at £29, but you can upgrade to add bubbles for £35. </p>
