<p>Right in the heart of Debenham – one of Suffolk’s prettiest historic villages – sits <a href="https://suffolkcambs.muddystilettos.co.uk/little-black-book/directory/the-debenham-lion/">The Debenham Lion</a>, a beautifully restored country pub with over five centuries of stories to tell. Once known as the ‘Gylynghows’ brewhouse back in the 15th century, this much-loved inn has been lovingly brought back to life by a local family, reclaiming its place at the centre of village life.</p>

<p>Inside it’s all about rustic charm with a modern twist – think crackling fires, book-lined walls and characterful nooks. The atmospheric tap room is the spot for a pint of local ale, while the saloon bar and snug are perfect for a laid-back lunch or leisurely dinner with friends. There’s also a generous upstairs function room – ideal for intimate weddings, parties and special occasions. (They’re even hosting a beer and cider festival up there this month – cheers to that!).</p>

<p>Food-wise, The Lion more than roars. Signature plates include the beloved Lion Burger with homemade fries and coleslaw, and golden Suffolk Blonde beer-battered haddock. Looking for something a little more refined? The pan-fried hake with Norfolk samphire and chorizo butterbean cassoulet is a winner. Sweet tooths are well catered for too – from tiramisu to Suffolk Meadow ice creams, or a generous East Anglian cheeseboard to linger over.</p>

<p>On our visit, my hubby went classic with the Lion Burger, while my toddler was happily sorted with a child’s portion of fish and chips. I tucked into the chicken shawarma and hummus flatbread with paprika-dusted fries – utterly delicious and so generous we couldn’t even attempt pudding. A glass of smooth, moreish house red sealed the deal. You can really taste the care for local produce and the passion for good food here.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-kid-friendly">KID-FRIENDLY</h3>



<p>There&#8217;s no fixed kids’ menu, but don’t let that put you off – the team are super accommodating. Popular dishes like burgers and fish &amp; chips can be scaled down for little appetites, and the chef is happy to adapt mains into child-sized versions. My son was very well looked after, which makes eating out with a toddler infinitely less stressful!</p>

<p>The Lion makes a fab pitstop whether you’re a local or passing through. You’re minutes from Aspall (yes, that cider), 20 minutes from Framlingham Castle for a post-lunch dragon hunt, and just up the road is Helmingham Hall for your stately home fix.</p>

<p>A proper country pub with community spirit at its heart. Cosy and welcoming, it’s a dream spot for autumn and winter: think roaring fires, a glass of red and long, chatty evenings. The courtyard garden offers a sunny escape in summer, though the interiors really sing in cosy-season. Bonus points for their brilliant new initiative: locals can swap homegrown produce with the chef in exchange for a bar tab – community pubbing at its finest.</p>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong> Excellent gastro food, cosy vibes and a real sense of community.<br><strong>Not for: </strong>Fussy kids who need heaps of space to run about.<br><strong>The damage: </strong>Starters from around £7, mains £14–£20, desserts £7ish. A hearty, great-value feast.</p>
