Suffolk &amp; Cambs


<p>It was the restaurant world’s Oscars this week (Mon 5 Feb) as the&nbsp;<a href="https://guide.michelin.com/gb/en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland</a>&nbsp;dolled out its constellation of culinary stars at Manchester’s Midland Hotel.&nbsp;</p>



<p>Michelin inspectors certainly weren’t dolling out stars likes sweets in the culinary playground. Just one new three star restaurant awarded to The Ledbury in London, six new two restaurants and 16 new one star restaurants. Plenty of diversity for diners, rewarding chefs whose influences come from from Spanish to Indian.</p>



<p>Although the foodie footprint remained largely the same in East Anglia, Lark in Bury St Edmunds was named among the 20 new Bib Gourmands (celebrating quality and value for money), alongside The Threehorses in Fordham over the border in Essex. So who are the gastronomic greats across Suffolk and Cambs? Enough from me, roomy pants on, let’s dig into the hottest tables in town.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-midsummer-house-cambridge"><strong><a href="https://midsummerhouse.co.uk">Midsummer House</a>, Cambridge</strong> <strong>★★</strong></h2>

<p>No introduction needed for Daniel Clifford’s beautiful Victorian riverside restaurant, which retains its two star status for an incredible 20th year, with its offering of ever-changing and inventive&nbsp;<em>haute cuisine</em>. </p>



<p><strong>The guide said:</strong> &#8220;Dishes continually evolve and, although they have a classic base, are packed full of personality and originality; this is a kitchen which is not afraid to push the boundaries. Luxury ingredients are generously used, flavours are measured, there’s an appealing range of different textures and many of the dishes are finished off at the table.&#8221;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><a href="https://www.restaurant22.co.uk">Restaurant Twenty-Two</a>, Cambridge <strong>★</strong></h2>

<p>Cambridge&#8217;s Restaurant Twenty-Two, was awarded a Michelin Star for the first time in 2023 and has retained its new starry status in 2024. Cambridge locals have been in love with this top quality restaurant for years, and you&#8217;ll have to be prepared to join the waiting list to bag a table. </p>



<p><strong>The guide said:</strong> &#8220;Sam’s food is poised, detailed and very precise; he has all the techniques and his plates are beautifully presented – go for one of the set menus and you’ll leave feeling impressed but also sated.&#8221;</p>

<p>Small, but perfectly formed restaurant Pea Porridge in Bury St Edmunds retains its title as the only Suffolk restaurant to hold a Michelin Star. Justin and his wife Jurga opened the charming hidden gem 15 years ago and it held a Michelin Bib Gourmand for several years before making history in 2021. </p>



<p><strong>The guide said:</strong> &#8220;The daily changing menu of North African, Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes sees lots of ingredients cooked over charcoal, beech, oak, birch or pine cones. The sourdough flatbread fresh from the oven kicks things off perfectly and the unfussy dishes deliver bold, well-defined flavours which are skilfully executed. The esoteric wine list champions organic and natural wines.&#8221;</p>

<p>This unassuming little restaurant in Bury St Edmunds only opened in February 2023 and has been awarded the only Bib Gourmand in Suffolk for 2024! Owners James and Sophia Carn have transformed this special little spot (that has been a police station, a bus shelter and a florist over the years) into a foodie destination with only 20 seats, serving inspired small plates featuring locally sourced seasonal ingredients. A must visit if you&#8217;re in the county. </p>



<p><strong>The guide said:</strong> &#8220;Choose from a great range of modern small plates that deliver satisfying, carefully judged flavours with a definite Mediterranean influence. Dishes could include tempura courgette flower or sopressini cacio e pepe – if you can’t make your mind up, go for the ‘Kitchen Selection’.&#8221;</p>
