Suffolk &amp; Cambs

I was feeling a little peckish when I visited this week and found myself at the bottom of King Street with it’s mix of independent shops and café culture and decided to pop into <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pg/Stickybeaks-Cafe-130548533631184/photos/?ref=page_internal" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Stickybeaks</a> – it’s been on my must do list for sometime now.

This café is technically on Hobson Street, from the main drag you can cut through Sussex Street, passing <a href="https://www.firedearth.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Fired Earth</a> and the swanky new menswear store <a href="https://trotteranddeane.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Trotter and Deane</a>.

The décor has a Scandi feel – well why not they live and breathe stylish and functional design.
It’s not the largest place and it’s pleasing to see that they haven’t attempted to cram in to many tables to maximise covers. The downside is that it can get crowded but that’s a good sign, right? You might end up on a sharing table but no-ones going to be listening here – there aren’t any stickybeaks round here (boom boom!).  It has a definite homely feel about it and there&#8217;s a mixture of students, friends enjoying a catch up and those using it to browse the newspapers over a cup of coffee.
Food orders are taken and paid for at the counter and food is then brought to your table. There’s no number system here, they miraculously know where you live and I like that. It’s not the most extensive menu but I would rather have a smaller choice where everything is freshly made.

The menu has changes each day and the breakfast menu starts with a pastries and croissants, sourdough toast and if you fancy something healthier yoghurt, berries and banana granola and apple and coconut bircher museli. On the hot front there’s a double cheese and honey roast ham filled croissant with tomato chutney with the option of a fried egg.  Prices start at £2 and go up to £5.50.

As it was lunch I opted for chestnut mushroom sage and garlic soup with bread (£5) and a bottle of Breckland Orchard Cloudy Lemonade,  well I had to try it as it was a finalist in the Muddy Awards 17 Best Local Produce &#8211; both were delicious.  If you wanted something a little more substantial there are various frittata combos, I particularly liked the look of the roast aubergine, red pepper and courgette frittata with rosemary and mozerella and a snip at £4.50 or the big brunch falafel with avocado, feta and chipotle dressing, pea shoots and a poached egg – all yours for a £7.50.

The salads offer an amazing array of colour and you can choose a side salad bowl for £4 or a salad plate with a mixture of all three for £8.

The tempation was too much and to finish off I tucked in a slice of cocnut and raspberry jam layer cake.  Not the best photo but, oh my, it was divine and washed down with the obligatory coffee.

So what else do they offer?  They serve wine and beer, take away coffee and food and also offer sweetie pots &#8211; great little take home treats for the kids.
On a practical note there&#8217;s space for a wheelchair, buggy or small pram and there&#8217;s a baby changing facility &#8211; there&#8217;s a general buzz in the cafe so I wouldn&#8217;t get worried about squealing babies. If I had younger kids in tow I’m not sure they’d fancy the lunch menu but it depends on how adventuresome your mudlets are (the mini mudders are excellent eaters and refuse to eat pasta and pizza *cough cough*) but they’d be more than happy with a hot chocolate and a piece of rocky road so it’s a perfect pit-stop break for my monsters.

So now you&#8217;re feeling supercharged I suggest you head on up King Street and have a nose at the fab independents that hang out up here.  There&#8217;s a fashion whiff in the air starting with <a href="https://www.pocokids.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Poco Kids</a> for those with mini Cruz or Harper Bekcham&#8217;s on their hands. <a href="https://www.boudoirfemme.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Boudoir Femme</a> and <a href="https://www.giuliofashion.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Guilio</a> offer luxury fashion labels for women, and the latter also sells menswear too.  There&#8217;s <a href="https://darrys.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">d&#8217;Arry&#8217;s</a> liquor loft and restaurant to enjoy a cheeky cocktail and the cafe culture continues with <a href="https://afternoontease.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Afternoon Tease</a>, the recently opened <a href="https://www.facebook.com/thelockercafe/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Locker Cafe</a> (only opened last month) and the hip <a href="http://www.theurbanshed.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Urban Shed</a>.
