Red to toe this AW17 season

Red is officially the colour of autumn and Cambridge has it covered. Check out the top picks spotted on the high street.

The depressing remnants of the sales rails are disappearing from the high street stores and as the refreshingly new autumn/winter trends appear there is one thing that is very clear – you’ll be seeing red.  Check out the glossies and you’ll be seeing head-to-toe burgundy, wine and cerise strutting their stuff down the runway. From coats and oversized knits to dresses and accessories, take it bold and monochrome or ease yourself in with touches here and there. It just so happens to be one of the most flattering colours to wear for all skin tones.

Thankfully the streets of Cambridge have the key new season trends covered, (meh, who needs the new Rushden Lakes with all this great clobber around?!). So carve out a few hours of sweet freedom and whizz into town and hit Zara, H&M, Office, Reiss, Boudoir Femme, French Connection. Seriously check these out and be the lady in red this season.

Best Foot Forward

Red Fashion Trends AW17

(Clockwise from left) I love a pair of pumps that you can wear with skinnies, leather, skirts and dresses and these bow fronted suede pair are from Mint Velvet (£89) a more modern take on the timeless ballerina.

Yee-haw, this suede pair of western boots from Next (£48) would look great with jeans, denim shirt and a jacket for a laid back weekend look and at this price…

With a hint of Pretty Woman about them these sassy boots from Zara (£120) sport a lower heel and a rich burgundy red that have taken this over the knee patent boot from escort to elegance. I’ve a definite fetish about shoes and these boots are coming home with me tonight.

Consider your weekend wardrobe sorted with high rise mom jeans, a white shirt and a pair of Adidas Gazelle trainers (£79.99). They come in an enticing array of colours but this burgundy red is bang on trend this season.

Cold Days

Red Fashion Trends AW17

(Above from left) Baby it’s cold outside and it’s only September, lord help us when the real winter starts. It’s time to invest in a good warm coat that will see you through the season and this Whistles parker (£189) is both practical and stylish.  Great for the school run, weekend walks and rainy day!

Wow, what a show-stopper! This red number from H&M (£99) and is one of my top picks as it’s 100% wool so will keep you toasty when it’s blowing a hooley outside.  With a more orange tinge this smart tailored coat from French Connection (£185) can be dressed for a smarter look but equally rocks with jeans. A classic that won’t age.

The parker has become a stone-cold winter classic but it doesn’t get more luxurious than a wool and cashmere mix – well done Ted Baker (£349 – ouch!)

(Above from Left) This is in fact a skirt and top (Zara, top and skirt £69.99 each) and will take you from day to evening – just add some statement earrings and killer heels.  The temptation is to pull out those trusted black boots but I much prefer the trend for accessorising with darker red boots which almost clash, but don’t!

Warehouse has found its grove again and they’re bang on trend with this cut out block print top (£36), team it with the skinny cut cords (£46).

The skirt of choice this season is still the midi-pleat. Can you squeeze another one into your wardrobe? Course you can! The winter version has landed in Next (£48)

Let’s paaarty! The new-season’s Victoriana trend gets a makeover with the Karen Millen (£225) red ruffle midi dress and this will take you through into the Christmas season (yikes the ‘C’ word!).  Change the look by styling with strappy sandals or a pair of high shoe boots.

(Above from left) Ditch those bobbling jumpers (go on, be ruthless) – it’s a great excuse to invest in some new red numbers.  Who doesn’t love a roll neck for the ultimate cosy feel and this one from Reiss (£110) is 100% wool.

The devil is in the detail and a decorative sleeve can add an interesting feature to an otherwise plain jumper.  Puffball sleeves look elegant on the H&M mohair blend jumper (£69.99), alternatively opt for wrist ties from French Connection (£80). Marks and Spencers have added straps to the sleeves of their Autograph two tone jumper (£45).

Accessorise It

Red Fashion Trends AW17

(Above from left) Not keen on going full out on a red alert? Accessories offer the perfect entry level for those tentative about embracing this colour.  Throw on a leopard print silk scarf (Boudoir Femme, £145) or add a pair of tassel earrings – yes, they’re still hanging around (River Island, £10).

Handbags in red and burgundy are all over the High Street this season and I’m loving the tassel detail on the traditional saddle bag (The Cambridge Satchel Company, £130).

Belt up, with this ox blood belt from Reiss (£60) and pop a bobble on your head with this two tone number from Jigsaw (£40)

The Online Option

Red Fashion Trends AW17

(Above from left) Puffy down jacket, £125; colour block sweater, £69; corduroy trousers, £59; suede ballet pump, £69; frill zip blouse, £49.

Whey too busy to hit Cambridge anytime soon? I’ve thrown in the internet option if you prefer to shop from your work (joke!). One of my favourite shops at the moment is & Other Stories – they always seem to be bang on the button.  Easy delivery and you can try them on in the privacy of your own home.
