Room for romance: six hotels for a sexy weekend!

Grab your fanciest pants and pack your suitcase - we've rustled up some seriously romantic Valentine's Day stays in Suffolk & Cambs to get you in the mood for love.

The Northgate, Bury St Edmunds

This converted townhouse with buzzy restaurant and glam cocktail bar in the centre of town is one of our favourite hotels and a great place to spend V-Day (or any day for romance). The plan: explore pretty Bury, share a gourmet meal of locally sourced food and wine and then head upstairs to bed with a bottle of bubbly, part of the hotel’s Romance Package which also includes a late check out and brekkie for two, hooray!

The Swan Hotel, Southwold

Right in the middle of Southwold (overlooking the main square and a pebble’s throw from the gorgeous beach and colourful beach huts), The Swan is a romantic bolthole by the sea. Expect amazing pops of colours, plush velvets and beautiful bathrooms in the vast rooms and a smart restaurant serving local fare for the special loved-up meal. There are plenty of cute cosy corners and lovely lounges for cuddling up together, plus they’ve dreamt up some fun packages with romantic extras like picnics on the beach and couples’ massages.

The Spa at Bedford Lodge Hotel, Newmarket

We’re very into the Valentine’s Package here, which includes a delicious five-course dinner at our award-winning Squires Restaurant, an overnight stay in a luxury Superior Room, followed by a full English breakfast the following morning. Could it get any better? Yes is could, because you’ll find a bottle of chilled Champagne and box of fudge in your room on arrival! Add on some spa treatments, like a couples’ massage if you really want to splash the cash.

The Varsity Hotel, Cambridge

Muddy was lucky enough to stay at The Varsity Hotel recently and there’s so much to love about this luxe boutique getaway in the heart of the city. Have dinner à deux at Six Brasserie, the hotel’s sexy rooftop restaurant with panoramic views of Cambridge and a lovely cocktail bar too – we ate grilled king prawns and chorizo skewers and can thoroughly recommend it, but there’s also a Valentine’s Day menu you can choose from which includes a glass of Champagne to start. Moving into the bedroom, there are 44 individual rooms and suites to choose from – the Senior College Suite with a private terrace overlooking St John’s Chapel is the one to book. Next day, explore the city and make use of the Glassworks Gym next door: the Jacuzzi overlooking the River Cam is a perfect place to wallow together.

Milsoms Kesgrave Hall, near Ipswich

These dreamy suites with bath and sexy sofa at the end of the bed are SO perfect for Valentine romps. It might look huge and grand on the approach, but this is actually a boutique affair from the talented Milsoms group and only has 23 rooms, plus a delightfully relaxed vibe. In spring and summer, no one bats an eyelid if you want to make the most of the views of sweeping grounds and spend an entire afternoon sipping rosé on the terrace before a romantic meal in the Brasserie. The new spa is lush too, if you really want to spoil yourselves.

Tuddenham Mill, nr Bury St Edmunds

Set in 12 acres in a converted watermill, Tuddenham is one of Suffolk’s dreamiest venues and we’re very partial to the gorgeous bedrooms (think egg baths and timber beams) and the wood cabin Meadow Nooks with hot tubs are very rustic romance. This year’s Valentine’s offer includes bed and breakfast, cocktails or G&Ts before dinner in cosy Upstairs at the Mill restaurant.
