The Varsity Hotel reveals £2m refurb
Have you been down to this riverside hotel recently? If not, you might not recognise it, because this boutique beauty has undergone a £2 million refurb making its 44 bedrooms even more stylish. Each one is individually designed and have herringbone wood floors, marble bathrooms and mod-cons aplenty. Special occasion? It has to be the corner suite with panoramic views of the city.
New shop opens in Rose Crescent
Hmm whats that delightful smell emanating into the Market Square? It’s the brand new Rituals store that has opened on the corner of Rose Crescent. It’s where French Connection used to be (I’m torn about this news as I loved a bit of FCUK), and is worth a wander around just to feel zen and soak up some of those delicious smells. We can see this fast becoming our go-to gift store – think upmarket scented candles and bath soak.
Vegan cafe opens in Bury St Edmunds
Vegans and plant-based food lovers rejoice, because there’s a new 100% vegan eatery in Bury St Edmunds. Allison’s Eatery can be found at 6 St Olaves Road and they also deliver. There everything from breakfast, lunch and cakes to try and you might recognise all the vegan fare from the market as Allison ran a stall there for many years. You’ll also find a small shop on site selling vegan snacks, soaps and pottery (err can pottery be anything other than vegan?!).
La Piazza by Signorelli’s opens in The Grafton Centre
Many Cambs folk who know and love Signorelli’s Deli on Burleigh Street will be delighted to hear that they’ve branched out and brought the flavours of the Med to The Grafton Centre with their new venture – La Piazza. Pretend you’re in sunny Italy and watch the world go by at the central bar in the main concourse with an aperol spritz and some of Alex Signorelli’s delicious authentic fare. We’re talking organic salads, fresh pasta, and the best lasagne you’ll ever taste. Keep an eye on our what’s on guide too for the many foodie and drink events they’ll be running.
The future of interiors comes to John Lewis Cambs
Renovating your house or just itching to update a room? Always! And now you don’t have to hope for the best when you pick out new colours, curtains and furniture and pray it all comes together how you imagined. John Lewis Cambridge is one of the first three stores in the country to trial a new virtual reality service. Muddy Cambs was one of the first to give it a go and it is AMAZING. You just put your rooms dimensions into an iPad, choose you furnishings and then don a futuristic looking mask and suddenly you’re no longer in the store but in a completely different room. You can even walk around it, see how the light comes through the windows – it was so realistic I almost tired to sit down on the virtual sofa. Anyway, if you lack a bit of confidence in your interior decisions you have to give it a go.
Cambridge Waffle Company makes a comeback
Remember The Cambridge Waffle Company (if you’ve tried one of their sweet sensations you’d never forget it)? It used to be on Fisher Square and closed in 2009. Our waistlines have been smaller ever since, but we’re delighted to hear that we can soon regain those extra inches as the company has made a comeback serving delicious waffles at Ta Bouche, the cocktail bar, cafe and restaurant in Market Passage. There’s all manner of waffly goodness to try – all-day breakfast, smoked salmon and avocado and vegan and gluten-free options. Plus all our favourite sweet options.
Oh, and Ta Bouche has had a makeover too – think Havana meets the beach with bright colours and furnishings.
Pocket Watch and Petticoats open new shop in Cambridge
Our favourite purveyors of fine vintage fares have opened a new shop in Cambridge on 9 August. The new store, which joins their Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds stores is at 16 St Johns Street – you won’t miss it. Its delectable mint green and the windows are full of tempting colourful vintage dresses. Venture inside and you won’t emerge for hours – there are swing dresses, wiggle dresses, high waisted trousers, knitwear and lovely gifts to discover.
New Cambridge ice rink opening date announced
It’s been a long time coming…Cambridge’s first ice rink was mean to open last summer, but finally we have a date to share with you. Get your skates out because it’s only just around the corner – 28th September. The new snazzy rink will be just off Newmarket Road and will be used by both the university and the public. See you there – I’ll be the one doing the triple axels, ahem the one clinging to the side for dear life more like.
