The hotel’s website claims it’s a home-from-home, but tbh if our home was like this we probably wouldn’t be in such a hurry for a weekend escape. For starters is has a well-stocked wine cellar, then there’s the pretty garden and tasteful rooms, not to mention the creative chefs in the kitchen.

Our dream scenario at The Crown involves sipping a Negroni in the garden as the sun sets then heading inside to work our way through the moreish dishes on the menu. The Crown is well-known locally for producing really great grub, from breakfast through to dinner and Sunday lunch, and we concur being partial to the wild mushroom risotto with truffle oil, or the occasional chargrilled Rib eye steak cooked to perfection with a side of peppercorn sauce.

Catch of the day comes fresh from local suppliers, there are also plenty of delicious vegan choices and Muddy also rates the sharing boards which are ideal for two to pick at while sipping a Pinot Grigot (or one of the 30 other recommended wines by the glass from the excellent cellar) and putting the world to rights  – think smoked salmon, mackerel pâté, prawn cocktail and rollmops.

Not that food and drink are the only thing on offer at this peaceful spot, there are also 11 ensuite bedrooms situated across a courtyard if you decide to extend your visit. Choose from room categories Good, Better and Even Better – the latter has a little seating area, tub, walk-in shower and access to a private terrace. We also love the magical, fairylight-lit garden tipi which is erected in April and available throughout the spring and summer for events.

There’s plenty to do in the area, with walks right from the door of The Crown to explore picturesque Stoke by Nayland and beyond into the heart of Dedham Vale, an area of Outstanding National Beauty.

Dog owners will rejoice because The Crown offers a pawsome (sorry not sorry) overnight stay package for pooches too, including treats, dog bed, towel and drool worthy breakfast.
