Situated in the hamlet of Pin Mill on the River Orwell, The Butt & Oyster is a well-known riverside pub that prides itself on good beer, good food, and great views. It’s a friendly, buzzy environment that is keen to welcome both children and dogs — dog treats are available as bar snacks, right beside the crisps and peanuts. The charming riverside views are worth a visit in themselves, but that hasn’t served as an excuse to sell mediocre food. No, The But & Oyster offers a fresh selection of hearty pub fare done to an elevated degree, with an (unsurprisingly) excellent selection of fish dishes.

The interior is cosy and classically Old Worlde pub, complete with winter fire, but the real attraction has to be the picnic tables outside, directly overlooking the river. A Saturday afternoon whiled away here with a cold drink and a bowl of crispy whitebait? Yes please.
