Could this be the perfect pub? The Anchor is certainly a strong contender for this title surrounded as it is by views of the wonderful village of Walberswick – it’s a picture-perfect, gastropub, with a stellar wine and beer list, and outstanding food.

Owned by Sophie and Mark Dorber, previous owners of the White Horse (Sloany Pony) in London – these are seasoned professionals who know a thing or two about food and drink. So it’s no surprise that the pub has featured in numerous best UK pub guides and national press roundups over the years. There’s ample outside space, but inside the décor is warm and welcoming. The bar area has a lovely fire for the winter months, there’s also a children’s room for families, and a vibrant, relaxed restaurant looking out onto the lovely garden and the dunes and beach huts beyond.

The menu ranges from classic fish and chips (but with inspired touches like jalapeno tartar sauce) to specials from around the world including curries with all the trimmings and seasonal dishes like fab crab linguine. This is great pub food, but with a sophisticated edge, and an emphasis on using local produce and seafood. There is plenty of vegan and veggie options using the seasonal herbs and vegetables from the pub’s own gardens.

Accommodation is across ten rooms, four en-suites in the arts and crafts pub building, and six garden chalets, all with their own entrance and super comfy interiors. Three of the chalets are also dog friendly and face a lovely quiet garden.

In the post-Covid era, this pub has really come into its own with plenty of outdoor tables at the front and a large patio and garden at back. The Anchor also boasts a custom-made outdoor pizza oven and outside bar. A two-sided marquee will be in place from May for restaurant and bar meals, and plenty more garden tables will also be on offer, with summer events planned including the annual Oyster Festival on August 7/8 and plenty of live music the summer. Roll on sunshine and Rosé in that lovely garden!

The Anchor will open for outside dining and drinking from April 12th, Garden rooms have self-contained entrances and will be open for bookings from April 16th.
