Scudamore’s Punting
A quintessentially Cambridge experience, punt along the River Cam, with an expert guide and some champers, taking in the gorgeous views of the colleges
You can’t come to Cambridge and not try your hand at punting or at the very least go on a punt tour, not only is it lots of fun, you will learn all about the city and see it from a whole different angle – hopefully not from the river bed if you happen to fall in!
Scudamore’s Punting has been running punt tours and punting punters up the river Cam since the beginning of the 20th Century, consequently, it is a slick operation with many boats and well-versed guides. If you come by train you will meet many eager beavers keen to sign you up to punt tours- just make sure you go with a reputable company like Scudamore’s, or head to their riverside booking offices, at the Mill Pond or Quayside.
You can take a self-hire punt towards Grantchester -but make sure you get some tips before you end up bouncing from bank to bank and not going very far – once you get the knack it is not that hard to master. Guided tours go along the backs of the colleges (private or group) where you get to see the magnificent colleges close up and learn all about the history too. You can also book an afternoon tea, champagne or gin punt too – oh yes, please to all three!
