Mercado Central, Cambridge

An outstanding Cambridge restaurant, serving modern Spanish food, and incredible wine.

Word travels fast in Cambridge if there’s a good restaurant – and Mercado Central is a brilliant one.

Mercado is located in a stylish dark blue townhouse on the pretty cobbled Green Street, right in the very centre of the city. This buzzy, modern Spanish restaurant has seating downstairs or up – the upstairs room is quieter, but spacious and inviting. Downstairs the bar has a super cute Estrella pump for that all-important cold Spanish beer and an open kitchen area. The fresh fish of the day is also on display and there is always a selection of wild cornish fish, Galician razor clams, queen scallops, and Scarlett prawns from Huelva. Other menu must-tries include chargrilled octopus with potato and an incredible pepper sauce, plus the croquettes, the seafood rice, or any of the steaks.

The wine list is equally impressive with sherry by the glass to fabulous bottles such as the Attis Albariño or the wide range of lovely Tempronilla based reds. The white shirt and denim apron-clad staff are professional, attentive, and knowledgable and will help you chose if you’re unsure.

Mercado is perfect for a special occasion or for a casual lunch as the menu allows you to choose from many smaller plates, or to add mains of incredible steaks or that lovely fresh fish. The environment is suitably sleek but with a relaxed atmosphere. This is one of our all-time favourites in Cambridge (the world?) and really worth a visit.
