Elsie May’s Electric Lounge, St Neots

Muddy says: This cool family-run café and bar in a former Electricity Company Showroom was brought back to life in December 2018 and serves delicious homemade food and cocktails, has a private room to book and hosts live music events. What a bright idea!

Like your tea and cake or cocktail with a side order of history? Then you’ll love Elsie May’s Electric Lounge. The family-run cafe and bar switched the lights on for the first time in December 2018 bringing a historic St Neots’ building back to life with a bang. The beautiful building in Market Square was built in 1927 as the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire Electricity Company Showroom (hence the name) and has also been a job centre, night club, and amusement arcade in its time. Who’s Elsie May then? Well, she’s the owner’s grandmother, who always dreamed of having her own tearoom one day. And she’d be proud of this bright and beautiful one.

While you’re enjoying all the homemade, locally-sourced treats on offer – special blend coffee, loose leaf tea, hot and cold breakfasts, lunch (everything from macaroni cheese to Welsh rarebit crumpets), afternoon tea and melt-in-the-mouth cakes, plus awesome cocktails, craft beer, spirits and wine on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, you can marvel at the interiors. The space was designed to show off the wonders of electricity, so we’re talking high ceilings, oak parquet floors and large windows, all of which have been restored to perfection.

We love that the entire space is dog-friendly too, so Fido doesn’t have to miss out on the fun, plus there’s a charming secret garden outside for alfresco drinks in summer. There’s also a private room called the Secret Den to hire (or you can hire the entire space) – and it would make one awesome backdrop to a party. Talking of parties, Elsie May’s also have live music events, with local bands performing throughout the year, as well as having a resident jazz pianist. See you on the dance floor!

Café opening times: Monday to Sunday 9 am – 4pm

Bar opening times: Thursday to Saturday 6.30pm to Midnight
