There are five en-suite guest rooms and a self-catering apartment, at Duke House and you can even hire the whole house, if you book far enough in advance for a brilliant party weekend away with friends.

Duke’s is like a best-kept secret, although it has been featured in Condé Naste traveller and is regularly reviewed as a truly exceptional B&B. Discreetly located in a row of pretty townhouses alongside the lovely green Christ Pieces, it is the epitome of a boutique B&B with heaps of character and elegant charm.

The name reflects the B&B’s right royal history – HRH Richard, Duke of Gloucester, was an architecture student in Cambridge in the late 60s and decided to buy and renovate the house You will find plenty of photos in the hotel lobby showing the Duke’s return to the house in 2012 to see what Liz and Rob Cameron (current owners) had done with the old place. Turns out he was so impressed he stayed the night.

Rooms are indeed fit for a Duke, bijou in comparison to some modern hotels, but with buckets of style and a super luxury feel. Each is individually decorated, in elegant period pieces and muted colours, all with a freshness that creates a bright relaxing environment. The studio apartment is on the ground floor with its own entrance, a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom with a bath and shower, bedroom and sitting room

If you book the whole house (popular with brides and their entourages pre-wedding day) you get sole use of the shared spaces such as the living room and balconies. You can even bring your own drinks to pop in the fridge in the breakfast room.

Breakfast is the main event as there is no restaurant for dinner. Everything (apart from some lovely English cheeses) is locally sourced and you can have breakfast tailored to your tastes. Go healthy with local fruits and compotes, yoghurt and granolas, or dive right in with some sausages and bacon from Clarks and Ware, plus free-range eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, and bread from a nearby bakery. All served in the elegant breakfast room, on delicate china – get that pinky in the air.

This is a really special place to stay, that is in the centre of the city, yet quiet, near to the river, colleges, and shops and restaurants.
