Poco Kids – for the mini trendsetters!

Poco Kids, King Street, Cambridge

X marks the spot at the awesome Poco Kids store which I happily stumbled across the other day while looking for a newborn gift for my friend’s baby girl.  Let me tell you, this shop makes me almost want to have another child! (yeah, I said almost). I was so taken with this cute Tinycottons hat (£33); in a Merino blend for extra comfort and one size fits all but alas it starts at age 2-8 so that was off the gift options for the baby (though not for my daughter – I may go back!).

If you have a mini fashion addict on your hands, who loves her shoes more than she loves you, Poco Kids is like kiddie fashion catnip. Selling clothes and accessories for little trendsetters (from age 0-12) this shop puts the pizazz into kids fashion. While the temptation is great to chuck your ungrateful, snivvly children in Fred + Florence while you spend your hard-earned money on yourself for once (oh just me?!) there’s no denying that a trip to Poco Kids will see your child fashion forward – aint no-one else gonna be rocking these looks at the next birthday disco!

Poco Kids is the brainchild of Laura Clarke, who quit Burberry’s to open Poco Kids online in February last year, followed swifty by the shop in August. With brands such as Tootsie MacGinty, Frnky’s and Finger in the Nose (pleeease, do they need any encouragement in that department?!) the shop has a global street style mix from New York and Europe, with a dash of English cool.

There’s plenty to coo over in the baby section. Colours are definitely unisex – no blue and pink camps here. That said, I did opt for the most delectable pair of ‘powder’ Nubuck Lolo boots from Donjse; don’t you just dig the tassels! They’re certainly not a bargain at £45 but with a beautiful gift bag included they just sang ‘buy me’ and I had to.

The older kids clothes and accessories have a more urban feel. Batman gets a nod on a t-shirt, which is finished with a football-style shirt on the back (£32.50, Little Eleven Paris).

What else can I interest you in? For those feeling more than a little flush the unisex Finger in the Nose Buckley silver jacket (£120 – £150) is really cool, as are these Tinycottons black dot knitted leggings (£20) and this Mini Rodini Blossom Onesie is just tooo cute (£44).

I think with designer kids fashion you’re either into it or think it’s a total waste of dosh, but the good thing about Poco Kids is that not everything is excruciatingly expensive – have a look online here, there are accessories starting from £6 for polka dot fabric laces that’ll jazz up any pair of trainers.

Or if you’re in the area and have popped into the store on King St, it’s worth spending half an hour exploring the area; away from the main Cambridge drag King St is full of fabulous independent shops and eateries. Poco Kids is equidistant from two delectable cafes: Sticky Beaks and Afternoon Tease for coffee, tea and something rather naughty from the cake section. Fancy something more bubbly, turn left out of the shop door and d’Arry’s stylish wine bar can be found in seconds. Plus two stores that should be in every woman’s little black book are Guilio (luxury and contemporary designer brands for men and women) and Femme Boudoir (an award winning fashion boutique). Have fun and if you make it down that way, let me know what you think of my suggestions, I’m all ears!
