Property Flirt – it’s back!

Hard to believe that we are just a few mins drive from the centre of Cambridge in this Grade II listed Arts and Crafts classic. The question is: can you guess the price?!

Cheffins Property

It’s been far too long since I’ve had a snoop around a grand design so here we are in sunny Great Shelford, Cambs – though today I feel more like Escape to the Country as we have on offer what I would describe as a wild card. Welcome to Galewood House and if you’re after a big garden just feast your eyes on this – 1.8acres of formal gardens and woodland on the Gog Magog hills.  The house was designed by William Flockart, one of the most influential players in the Arts & Crafts moveent in the 1900s, no less..  The Galewood estate was divided into three parts in 1956, and Galewood House – this is where the wild card comes in as you are attached to the original house but don’t let that put your off – we’re still talking 3,000 sq ft of property. For those of you who are knew to this game – rhe rules are simple I show you round a des res in Cambridgeshire and you guess the price. Ok so are you ready to play – let’s go in and have a poke around.

Flockhard arts and crafts staircase

The good news is that when the estate was divided Galewoos House got the Flockart-designed five-foot front doo and the arts and crafts staircase.

The interiors might not be to your taste, but they’re immaculate

Galewood house

Amost every room has an  arts and crafts element including these huge original fireplaces – the study bags the biggest.

Dining room

This house has Christmas written all over it (I’m getting the tinsel out already) and the dining room is large enough for a lavish banquet.

Aga Galewood House

A good-size family kitchen has the requisite aga –  no country manor house should be without one. Downstaris there is also a conservatory off the kitchen which provides a more informal eating area – that’s where the mini-mudders will live.

So let’s head up that glamerous staircase which you could make a grand entrance at your Christmas drinks. Upstairs there are more fine examples of arts and craft craftmanship – just look at those bedroom doors.

Upstairs there are four good sized bedrooms, the master has an ensuite bathroom and all the rooms are flooded with light.  There’s also a family bathroom and separate loo. – I would be tempted to knock them into one and make a bigger bathroom.

So let’s head downstairs and get out in the splendiferous garden. Privacy and tranquility is on offer here – there are woodlands (my kids will be banished to this bit), formal gardens, an ornamental pond and Breeze house. There’s a storage barn that’s perfect for your ride-on lawn mower as using a normal mower in a garden this size would be like painting the fourth bridge.

And here she is from the back. Nice, eh?

So to recap – we have a four bedroom, three reception room semi-detached grade II  listed iconic house (albeit part of a private historic estate) in the sanctury of the Gog Magog Hills.  The house is within a mile of Addenbrookes and five minutes drive from Central Cambridge.  As for schools – you’re spoilt for choice as the private schools of The Perse, The Leys, St Faiths and St Mary’s are all a few minutes drive away. For commuters, Cambridge train station is three miles away and Great Shelford train station, with a direct service into London Liverpool Street, less than half a mile away.

So you fellow nosey parkers, how much do we think this unique Cambridge beauty is going for? Find out here, and book in for a viewing should you fancy it while I adjourn to the garden with my rosé to supervise the gardeners.
