Fin Boys, Cambridge

This funky new fish butchery and deli opened in the middle of lockdown, which is an incredibly bold move if you ask us. Located on cool Mill Road, the handmade bar is modelled after Roka, the delicious sushi place in London. It’s run by chefs Jay Scrimshaw (formerly of street food joint Guerrilla Kitchen and finalist on Gordan Ramsay’s F Word) and Richard Stokes (The Three Horseshoes, Madingley; Parker’s Tavern). Take a look at their Instagram to see their mouthwatering selection of everything from oysters to John Dory – you won’t be able to resist going in for a bite to eat.

Another Mill Road secret, The Sea Tree has the best fish and chips in the city. That’s not all it’s known for, however, and we recommend trying their grilled fish, linguine, or even their take-home salmon jerky – paired with a bottle of champagne, of course. You can check out their website for their current offering, but it’s worth popping by just for the fish counter alone.

Indian restaurant Sea Spice serve an incredible selection of dishes, with the Malambar Fish Curry a must-try. Cooked with the freshest of catches, this is the ideal place to get your fish-fix with a difference. With dreamy interiors and the loveliest tableware, head to Aldeburgh for a piquant take on poisson.

Possibly the most well-respected fish restaurant in East Anglia, The Lighthouse has been operating for over twenty five years. Start with the pan-seared scallops with pancetta salad, and move onto the Grilled hake fillet with piperade & sautéed garlic – you won’t look back. The restaurant gets rather busy in the summer, so we’d recommend booking a table before visiting.

L’escargot Sur Mer, Aldeburgh

This seaside town is the place to be, clearly. L’escargot Sur Mer opened last summer when the London branch – a Soho institution- was closed for Covid. It’s now a permanent fixture near the seafront in Aldeburgh, and has a short menu serving the most delicate dishes. The dressed crab is a personal favourite, but anything you pick is bound to be delicious – all served by the waves. Open for lunch and dinner Wednesday – Sunday.

Maison Bleue, Bury St Edmunds

An incredibly chic little restaurant, Maison Bleue is French dining at its finest. Led by chef Pascal Canevet, the set menus often change, but always feature an amuse bouche and petit fours. Come for the fish, and stay for the desserts, which include the enticing ‘Green apple mousse, cocoa butter, salted caramel and hazelnuts’ and ‘White peach confit, white chocolate, peach sorbet’ – oui, merci.

This beachside hut used to be a bring your own bottle joint – but it’s DIY no longer. Think long wooden tables, and tanks filled with seafood waiting to be plated. You walk in via the fishmongers itself (that’s how fresh it all is), and while it’s certainly not fine dining, you’ll want to book ahead for the perfect spot. The lobster is delicious, as is the ice cold Muscadet.

The Oysterage describe themselves as ‘simple and uncomplicated’, and they aren’t wrong. Tuck into salmon pate and of, course, some oysters, and enjoy time in a traditional seafood restaurant that dates back to the 60s. With two vessels and a commitment to sustainable fishing, you’re doing something good for the local economy and the sea, too.
