The talented locals behind The Indie Store
As we gingerly step back into the real world, it's more important than ever to support local. Here some of our Indie Store businesses recount their journey and show what makes them special
I’m Clare, the founder of Botanical Forrest – calming and therapeutic scented candles and wax melts. In March 2020 my role in the corporate world was made redundant. After two decades working in London and living in Suffolk, I knew I wanted to make a radical career change. I felt a strong pull to work back in Suffolk. I absolutely love fragrance in my home and I believe scent is incredibly emotive, can improve our mood and sense of wellbeing. So I followed my dream and took the plunge to pursue my own business. Botanical Forrest is a way of contributing to people’s emotional wellbeing especially as we are currently spending so much time at home. I hope our products help to capture a memory and evoke a spirit of contentment.

Almost forty years ago, Margaret Weeds – Nottingham native, contemporary of one Anita Ruddock, and qualified in herbal medicine and aromatherapy – was suffering with very sensitive skin. She wasn’t alone: eczema ran in her family and she and her children were all plagued with sore, dry, itchy patches. Armed with her exceptional herbal knowledge, she started creating remedies with organic herbs, plant oils and natural active ingredients that were kind to super-sensitive skin. The result was a small range of gentle, effective, all-natural skin care, hair care (and later) makeup. On the strength of these results, Margaret and her daughter Abi launched Odylique in 2003, a company with a passion for the power of genuine natural skincare. They’re still a family-owned company run by Abi and a dedicated team of skin-loving experts in rural East Anglia. Every single one of Odylique’s products is handmade in their Suffolk eco-HQ.
The original pink gin, made with real raspberries, that’s been titillating taste buds since 2013. From day one, we’ve always been about fresh fruit rather than fancy flavourings. The raspberries are grown locally to our rural Cambridgeshire HQ and we only produce the gin during the raspberry cropping season. Thanks to these plump beauties, Pinkster is deliciously dry with a hint of fruit and an exceptionally smooth finish.
