<p>Halloween&#8217;s approaching and it’s time to let the kids loose on a poor old pumpkin with a Stanley knife (supervised,&nbsp;of course),&nbsp;to carve&nbsp;’em into spooky lanterns.&nbsp;If you want to turn it into more of an adventure than merely popping into the local supermarket, how about picking your own at a local farm?&nbsp;The orange globes are ripe’n’ready and have zero food miles (bonus brownie points) so here’s the Muddy guide of the best places&nbsp;to nab yours&nbsp;in Suffolk &amp; Cambs.</p>

<p>You can visit Pumpkin Jim at his patch in Ickleton, Cambridge this year from 1<strong>9 &#8211; 20 and 25 &#8211; 31 October</strong> to get your pick of the gourds. And it&#8217;s not just pumpkins ripe for the picking. You can put your back into some seasonal veg shovelling or pick some wild flowers too. If you prefer to leave it to the pros there are food trucks and the Fat Pumpkin Café on site and a play area with sandpits, pedal tractors and straw bale pyramids to keep kids entertained. This patch is open during the October half-term, but booking online is essential. </p>

<p>Make that Scarewell (see what they did there?) Farm. For half-term and Halloween, Sacrewell transforms into a spooky experience, with witches and ghouls, secret maps, games, costumes, activity packs, play barn and a pumpkin patch, where you can, of course, pick your own and then paint it. For 2024 the event is called <a href="https://www.sacrewell.org.uk/events/halloween-october-half-term/">the Big Halloween Mash-Up</a> and it&#8217;s running from <strong>26 – 31 October</strong> with a mad scientist lab, a zombie zone, a spider walk, a witches’ lair, a monster mash glow disco and a scarecrow village.</p>

<p>Get the kids to do the hard work for you by taking them to pick pumpkins and attend the Pumpkin Carving Workshops at Skylark Maize Maze and Funyard this year as part of their wider <a href="https://skylark-events.co.uk/week-of-wickedness/">Week of Wickedness</a> from <strong>19 – 31 October</strong>, which includes pumpkin carving, magic shows, tractor rides, scarecrow smashing, den building and pig racing (you know that classic halloween activity!). </p>

<p>Pick your own pumpkins directly from the field at Siam Hall on the <strong>12/13 October, 19/20 October</strong> and every day in half term (<strong>26 &#8211; 31 October</strong>). There will be plenty of Halloween decor and pumpkin carving to get you in the mood for the spooky season over half term. After all that pumpkin picking you&#8217;ll have worked up an appetite so pack a lunch to enjoy in the picnic area. </p>

<p>A lovely farm that&#8217;s been growing pumpkins seasonally for 25 years, so they  know their squashes. This year there are a whopping 20 varieties to choose from, which those in-the-know would call big, small, orange, white, ribbed, smooth, and, err, knobbly&#8230;..Follow a decorated trail to the field, choose your pumpkins, twist them off the vine, pop them in the wheelbarrow and return to the shop area for them to be priced up. Simple. After you&#8217;ve chosen your perfectly imperfect pumpkin you can head with the kids to the outdoor playground. Open now until the end of half term. </p>

<p>Your choice &#8211; pick your own directly from the field or choose from a large selection of pre-picked ones at this small Cambs farm. The coffee van will be on site for takeaways to reward yourself for your pumpkin-picking efforts. Open this year on <strong>12/13 October, 19/20 October and 25 &#8211; 31 October. </strong></p>

<p>There are pumpkins as far as the eye can see at this patch right next to the A14. You can choose from 20 different varieties and the patch is open every weekend in October from 9am &#8211; 5pm as well as over half term at Roughham Estate in Suffolk. There are also two very cool special pumpkin events on the <strong>12 October and 26 October</strong> from 5:30pm &#8211; 9:30pm: Pumpkins by torchlight and a silent disco! </p>



<p>As well as choosing their perfect pumpkin, kids will enjoy the sandpits, pedal tractors and pumpkin-based games, while older kids will love the chance to get a selfie with the Rougham Estate Scarecrows. You won&#8217;t go hungry here with the chance to buy coffee, posh toasties, cakes, ice creams, waffles, fish and chips, burritos, fried chicken, New Delhi-style street food and loaded fries. There&#8217;s even a licensed bar on-site if the pumpkin fun gets a bit too much for you!</p>

<p>Indecisive types might struggle here &#8211; there are over 60,000 pumpkins to choose from including white pumpkins, warty pumpkins, stripey pumpkins and even pink pumpkins (we approve!). Once you&#8217;ve narrowed it down to your select one, two or half a dozen head to the Halloween Spectacular Show or visit the Field of Fun featuring a wooden maze, zip wire, inflatables, gold mine, duck racing, go karts, a tyre mountain, crazy golf and farm skittles. Loaded Dog Company, The Greek, and Honest Crumble will be on site serving hot food and drinks as well as Los Churros, serving waffles and chocolate-covered churros! <p>Southwold&#8217;s popular family attraction also does pumpkin-picking for the Autumn season and once you&#8217;ve taken your pick there&#8217;s plenty to entertain including a Goulish Go-Kart track, Cheeky Monster Trail, Trick or Treat Trail, Golden Pumpkin Hunt and Haunted House. The patch is open from <strong>18 October &#8211; 3 November, 9:30 &#8211; 4pm (closed Monday 21 October)</strong></p>

<p>Last but not least Bury Lane Farm in Melbourn, South Cambs is open for the third year for PYO pumpkins and it looks brilliant from the A10! As well as choosing your own straight from the field you can then visit the spooky halloween shop inside &#8211; full of all sorts of horrible things kids will love as well as the café or the supersize soft play. </p>
